FBI Season 9: Release Date, Story, & Everything We Know

Despite the cancellation of its spin-offs, FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International, the CBS drama FBI remains popular and will continue airing. While the network is planning some adjustments for the upcoming season, viewers can rest assured that the show isn’t going anywhere soon.

The eighth season began with a shocking death – Agent Dani Rhodes was killed, even though another character seemed much closer to dying at the end of the previous season. Surprisingly, Alana De La Garza’s Isobel lived, making it a major twist for a show that rarely eliminates main characters.

Several characters faced major challenges. Isobel turning down the promotion created problems for OA and could also affect Maggie, especially since OA’s relationship with Gemma is crumbling. Adding to the drama, Maggie’s sister was tragically murdered by an enemy from her past, and Jubal narrowly avoided losing his son during a large-scale terrorist attack.

Of course, there have been some highlights too. Scola and Nina got married, a new team member, Agent Eva Ramos, joined as Scola’s partner, and the new show CIA quickly became popular. Both shows didn’t hesitate to include characters from each other, creating fun crossovers.

CBS has already renewed FBI for another season, so fans can expect more episodes. Whether or not the season 8 finale will leave viewers on the edge of their seats remains to be seen, but there’s still plenty to anticipate.

FBI Season 9 Has Already Been Confirmed By CBS

This spring, CBS canceled two shows: the medical drama Watson after two seasons, and the new comedy DMV, despite featuring Tim Meadows. However, fans of FBI had reason to celebrate, as the show had already been renewed for a ninth season well in advance.

In April 2024, CBS initially renewed its three FBI shows: FBI, FBI: Most Wanted, and FBI: International. However, while Most Wanted and International were later cancelled, the original FBI series received excellent news. CBS ordered three more seasons of FBI even before season six had finished airing.

CBS pointed out that FBI was drawing over 12 million viewers per episode across CBS and Paramount+, a significant jump from the previous year. While most shows aren’t renewed for many seasons, FBI had several factors working in its favor, leading to a guaranteed run through season 9.

While the drama FBI isn’t performing as well in its eighth season, it briefly appeared in the top 20 shows for the first week of March. However, it didn’t make the list of the top 20 network and streaming shows over a 28-day period in April, unlike CIA, which ranked at number 13.

When Will FBI Season 9 Release?

While CBS hasn’t announced an exact date, FBI will be back for its fall season. Typically, the show returns between late September and mid-November – it only deviated from this schedule due to the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes. Based on previous seasons, we can expect season 9 to premiere around mid-October 2026.

CBS is slightly adjusting the time slot for the show FBI on Mondays. While it previously aired at 9 p.m. Eastern Time for season eight, new episodes will now begin at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. This change is possible because the network has openings after canceling Watson and concluding the runs of DMV and The Neighborhood.

The show CIA will now air at 9 p.m., keeping it alongside another Dick Wolf series in primetime. At 10 p.m., viewers can watch Harlan Coben’s Final Twist, a true crime show led by author Harlan Coben. While it’s unclear if CIA and FBI will eventually feature a combined storyline, having them both air on Monday nights suggests that might happen.

What FBI Season 9’s Story Could Be

Most episodes of the TV show FBI feature self-contained stories, meaning events don’t usually continue from one week to the next. However, the show sometimes breaks this pattern. For example, season 7 ended with a cliffhanger – Isobel collapsed and appeared to be seriously injured. The beginning of season 8 quickly resolved that by showing Isobel had recovered in the hospital, but then introduced a new twist by killing off a different character.

Because of how season 8 ended, we can expect some of those storylines to continue into season 9, and that might include OA being considered for a promotion. The new second-in-command disciplined OA for not following orders by taking him off field work, but it’s unlikely he’ll stay sidelined for long if Zeeko Zaki remains on the show.

Maggie continues to sharpen her skills by working on regular FBI cases, but the storyline involving Eva was left unresolved. Whether the show explores Scola’s marriage further likely depends on if Shantel VanSanten is able to return as Nina.

Isobel and Jubal currently lead the agents at 26 Fed very directly, but that could shift in season 9 if ADIC Lawrence Green starts taking a more active, day-to-day role in their cases.

It’s also possible we’ll see some changes to the cast. Since Katherine Renee Kane left as Tiff, the show FBI has been trying out different partners for Scola, and Dani Rhodes seemed like a permanent addition at the end of season 7. While Eva has become a good fit with the team, her future isn’t certain. Regardless, fans will be able to rewatch season 8 of FBI on Paramount+ during the break before season 9 premieres this fall.
