As a devoted fan of Charles Shyer’s illustrious career, I find myself deeply saddened by the news of his passing. A man whose work has brought laughter and tears to countless audiences for decades, his absence leaves an unfillable void.
On Friday, at the age of 82, Charles Shyer, famed for co-writing the Academy Award-nominated film “Private Benjamin” with Nancy Meyers and best recognized as the director of “Father of the Bride,” passed away.
His family confirmed his passing in a statement to Variety.
With deep sorrow that can’t be put into words, we announce the passing of our cherished father, Charles Shyer. His absence has left an irreplaceable void in our lives, yet his impact continues to resonate through his children and the five decades of remarkable work he created. We celebrate his extraordinary life and acknowledge there will never be another quite like him.
Together, they penned the renowned screenplay for “Private Benjamin” (1980), a work they accomplished during their 19-year marriage which ended in divorce in 1999.
The movie that received an accolade for original screenplay at the 53rd Academy Awards is one of their numerous fruitful partnership projects during the ’80s and ’90s.
Throughout my professional journey, I’ve had the privilege of garnering significant praise for my directorial work on several films. Among these, I’m particularly proud of Baby Boom, featuring the talented Diane Keaton, as well as Father of the Bride and Irreconcilable Differences. These projects have left a lasting impact in the realm of filmmaking.
Shyer is survived by his daughters Hallie Meyers-Shyer, 37, Annie Meyers-Shyer, 44, and Sophia Shyer, 18, and son Jacob, 18.
His exact cause of death has not been revealed, at this time.
