A recently discovered book about the Fast & Furious series shares a surprising story idea for Dom Toretto that could have drastically changed the direction of the entire film franchise.
Barry Hertz’s book, Welcome to the Family: The Explosive Story Behind Fast & Furious, tells the story of the blockbuster Fast & Furious franchise and its star, Vin Diesel, looking at both how it became popular and what the future holds.
The book explores why director Justin Lin unexpectedly left the Fast & Furious series before Fast X, despite having directed five of the previous films.
What to Read Next
Originally, he was set to direct Fast X, but after a few days of filming, he announced on social media that he would be leaving the director’s chair. He’ll still be involved in the movie as a producer, with the backing of Universal.
For more than a decade and across five movies, we’ve had the chance to film incredible actors, amazing stunts, and truly spectacular car chases. As someone who grew up as the child of Asian immigrants, I’m especially proud to have helped create one of the most diverse franchises in film history. I’m deeply thankful to the fantastic cast, crew, and studio for all their support and for making me feel like part of the Fast family.

According to an excerpt shared with IndieWire, director Justin Lin left the Fast X project because of growing disagreements with Vin Diesel and challenges working with Diesel’s sister and producer, Samantha Vincent, who frequently communicated on his behalf. Lin reportedly reached a limit after these ongoing creative conflicts.
He explained that a major disagreement arose over the movie’s script and how it ended. Although the plan was always to leave the audience on a cliffhanger with Fast X, early versions of the script included a surprising reveal: that Dante was actually Little Brian’s father.
In Fast X, Dante (Jason Momoa) falsely accuses Dom of a terrorist attack in Rome, putting Dom and Elena Neves’ (Elsa Pataky) son, Brian Marcos, in danger from The Agency. Some of the filmmakers believed this shocking turn of events was a fitting, though grim, way for Dom to confront the importance of family – the very thing he values most.

The head of the Fast family faced a difficult choice: risking his life to save a child who wasn’t his own, but was actually the son of his greatest enemy. However, Vin Diesel, among others, disagreed with this assessment.
A planned storyline involving a fight to the finish – a “battle royale” – between Hobbs and Shaw, and Dom and Jakob, was ultimately scrapped and never filmed.
He mentioned that they considered bringing back the characters from The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. At one point, Vietnam was even discussed as a filming location. Most surprisingly, an early script featured Dante gathering a team of villains – including Carter Verone (2 Fast 2 Furious), Fenix (Fast & Furious), Jah (Fast & Furious 6), and Kara (Furious 7), along with other enemies of Dom Toretto – to plot a massive revenge scheme.
On December 18th, a new book called “Welcome to the Family: The Explosive Story Behind Fast & Furious” will be released, detailing the making of the blockbuster movie franchise. You can order it on Amazon now.
