Fast & Furious 11 Hit with Another Blow from Universal

There’s some disappointing news about the movie meant to finish the Fast & Furious series. Vin Diesel had said before that Fast & Furious 11 would be the last film in Universal Pictures’ most popular movie franchise.

According to a recent report in the Wall Street Journal, Fast & Furious 11, also called Fast X Part 2, is reportedly significantly exceeding its planned budget. The series began in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious and has since grown into a hugely successful collection of films, with 2023’s Fast X being the most recent installment. Over the last 24 years, the franchise has earned Universal more than $7 billion.

A source says the latest version of the script for Fast & Furious 11 would cost around $250 million to make. This means the production team still needs to cut costs by about $50 million. Vin Diesel had mentioned wanting to film the last movie primarily in Los Angeles, but this created budget problems because of higher wages and fewer tax benefits in that city.

To reduce costs, the filmmakers are thinking about filming in fewer international locations and potentially reducing the screen time for some actors, or even cutting their roles completely. Universal is also exploring more affordable options to keep the Fast & Furious franchise going. These ideas include a live-action TV show, spin-off movies focusing on certain characters, or even making a simpler, lower-budget film. Ultimately, they want to refresh the franchise and appeal to a new audience.

Could Technology Be Used to Bring Back a Beloved Character?

At this summer’s FuelFest, Vin Diesel shared that he’d recently spoken with executives at Universal Pictures about the next Fast & Furious movie, and they wanted it delivered by April 2027. Diesel explained he had three requests. “I said under three conditions,” Diesel stated, “To bring the filming back to Los Angeles, focus again on street racing, and bring Toretto together with his old partner, the late Paul Walker.” Diesel confidently concluded, “That is what you’re gonna get!” as he left the stage.

This raises the question of if the movie creators will employ technology to recreate Paul Walker’s character, Brian O’Conner. Walker tragically passed away in a car accident in November 2013 when he was 40 years old. Furious 7 was actively being filmed when Walker died.

, Jason Momoa stated he hasn’t received any information about appearing in the next installment. “I’d be thrilled to reprise the role,” Momoa shared during an appearance on ThePlaylist’s Bingeworthy Podcast. “I really would love to come back and play the character,” he emphasized. “Fans worldwide adore that character…it’s incredible. However, I haven’t received a script, so it won’t be happening anytime soon,” Momoa explained.

Although there isn’t a confirmed release date for Fast & Furious 11, the film has already faced several setbacks. Vin Diesel first announced on social media that the next installment would arrive in April 2025. However, director Louis Leterrier later suggested a 2026 release. Universal Pictures hasn’t officially confirmed either date.
