Fantastic Four’s Baby Franklin Richards: MCU’s Next Superpowered Game-Changer Revealed!

The recently unveiled trailer for “Fantastic Four: First Steps” hints at a very literal interpretation of its title – members Sue Storm and Reed Richards, part of the Fantastic Four team, are expecting a baby. In the original stories, this duo has two children named Franklin and Veleria who possess extraordinary abilities. Given this, it’s not unexpected that these new additions to the family might also become superheroes, potentially expanding the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) roster.

Let me share some insights regarding Marvel’s original team, the Fantastic Four, focusing on their newest member, baby Franklin, and the implications of his appearance within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

In a simpler form: Learn about Marvel’s first superhero family – the Fantastic Four, the role of their latest addition, baby Franklin, in the MCU, and what this means for future stories.

The premise of Fantastic Four: First Steps

The latest updates on the upcoming Fantastic Four movie suggest it won’t follow the traditional origin story. Instead, the plot unfolds years after Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm, who later became Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and the Thing respectively, have already acquired their superpowers. This is after they traveled through space, were exposed to radiation, and returned to Earth. In this universe where Iron Man and Spider-Man also exist, the Fantastic Four are Earth’s sole superheroes.

In the freshly released preview, Sue declares that she’s expecting a baby, offering comfort to Reed by stating they can manage parenthood alongside their superhero duties. Excited about the prospect, Johnny and Ben express their anticipation for becoming doting uncles.

Later, an antagonist called the Silver Surfer (portrayed by Julia Garner) appears to alert the Fantastic Four that their world is earmarked for annihilation. The Silver Surfer typically heralds the approach of Galactus, a colossal cosmic force that devours planets. Intellectually gifted scientist Reed frantically jots down equations in an attempt to discover a means to safeguard the planet. As the Fantastic Four suit up in space attire, it seems they are embarking on a journey into the cosmos, possibly to confront or engage with either the Silver Surfer or Galactus himself.

Will Franklin arrive in First Steps?

Based on the film’s title, it seems we might witness young Franklin taking his initial steps. Interestingly, the baby isn’t shown in the trailer, but Sue appears noticeably pregnant when the Silver Surfer debuts and doesn’t seem to be involved in later fight sequences. It’s plausible that Sue will deliver their eldest child, Franklin, during the movie. In a different scene, Reed and Sue are captured looking into an empty crib, hinting at the imminent arrival of Franklin.

The Fantastic Four are often referred to as Marvel’s primary family. They aren’t just colleagues or teammates, they act more like siblings towards each other. With a newborn added to their group, the importance of their familial duties increases significantly, given the potential threat of Galactus destroying the planet before the baby achieves its first developmental milestones. However, we’re optimistic that the baby will not only make it through this movie but also contribute to future Marvel movies.

Franklin’s powers and role in the MCU

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at the formidable might that little Franklin exhibits in the comic book world. Much like Scarlett Witch and Jean Grey, he possesses extraordinary abilities such as telekinesis and telepathy. What makes Franklin even more intriguing is the role played by Agatha Harkness, who was brilliantly portrayed by Kathryn Hahn in ‘WandaVision’, acting as his nanny for a period of time.

Marvel has unveiled plans for two upcoming Avengers movies: “Avengers: Doomsday” featuring Doctor Doom, longtime foe of the Fantastic Four, as the primary antagonist, and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. Notably, Robert Downey Jr., who originally launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Iron Man before his character made the ultimate sacrifice to save the world in “Avengers: Endgame”, will portray Doctor Doom. This version of Doom appears to be from a different universe compared to the one inhabited by our Iron Man.

In the movie “Doomsday,” it’s a given that Mr. Fantastic and Doctor Doom, long-time adversaries from the comics, will likely have a confrontation. Although we won’t reveal specific plot details of “Doomsday” or “Secret Wars,” we can hint that Franklin is central to the “Secret Wars” storyline in the comic books. Therefore, you can anticipate him not only appearing but possibly demonstrating his powers in the forthcoming films.

Regarding “First Steps“, it’s highly improbable that we’ll witness infant Franklin fighting Galactus – but you never know! After all, baby Jack-Jack managed to overcome a villain singlehandedly in “The Incredibles“.
