Fantastic Four Trailer Sparks Outrage Over ‘Woke’ Silver Surfer Reveal!

Fans of Marvel comics were stirred into excitement and controversy following the release of the initial trailer for the Fantastic Four reboot on Thursday, sparking a flurry of criticism regarding a perceived modern update to the legendary character, the Silver Surfer, which some viewers have termed as a ‘progressive’ or ‘socially aware’ change.

The primary character, who serves as a messenger from the cosmos for the planet-consuming entity Galactus, has typically been represented as male across Marvel comics and film adaptations. In the year 2007, Doug Jones (provided with a voice by Laurence Fishburne), was the one who embodied this role in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Currently, Julia Garner from Ozark and The Wolf Man fame is taking on a cosmic character. She’s portraying the Shalla-Bal version of the Surfer, making an impressive debut in the latest Fantastic Four: First Steps trailer.

Garner’s Surfer contemptuously remarks, as he stands against the valiant quartet – Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) – ‘Your world has been designated for destruction.’

Although some people were pleased with the revival following the 2015 failure, the trailer provoked swift backlash, as fans compared it unfavorably to controversial retellings similar to the Snow White remake.

As a loyal fan who might not be as “in-the-know” as others, I can’t help but express my disapproval about the change in Silver Surfer’s gender, as I stated, “I dislike that Silver Surfer is now a woman.” Another follower seems to share this sentiment, saying, “Silver Surfer is a male character. It seems Disney isn’t getting it right.

The continuous comments were critical, with one viewer voicing their dissatisfaction: “Silver Surfer was portrayed as male in the film, and his backstory confirmed this. The movie seems destined to falter if it incorporates modern social sensibilities. Audiences tend to prefer traditional elements and preserving the history of the comics.

Some were ready to ditch the film entirely.

One user passionately expressed their discontent with the new direction of ‘The Fantastic Four’, stating it seems to be following a trend similar to that of other Marvel characters, such as the Silver Surfer. They caution against the notion that ‘woke’ ideas are no longer relevant, and they encourage others to boycott ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’.

One user is upset about how The Fantastic Four is being handled in its new storyline, saying it resembles changes made to other Marvel characters like the Silver Surfer. They believe we should not assume that inclusive stories (often labeled as ‘woke’) are no longer being told, and they suggest avoiding ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’.

Though advocates for the movie trailer argued that Marvel Comics had indeed shown a female version of the Silver Surfer in various narratives, this fact failed to convince the disgruntled spectators.

‘The Fantastic Four is ruined, they made a woman into Silver Surfer,’ one displeased post exclaimed. ‘I don’t care about an alternate universe that has one, it was bizarre because it only ran for one series! Silver Surfer is a male character!!!’

A supporter recently shared a split image comparing Doug Jones’ 2007 depiction to Julia Garner’s current take, humorously labeling it as “The most remarkable degradation of the Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four history.

In another remark fueling further discussion, a user posed the query: ‘For how long must I wait to witness a white Black Panther? A genuine inquiry.’

Yet, the revamped Silver Surfer doesn’t show any signs of restraint – she’s been depicted charging through fiery blasts and dismissing the Human Torch as if he were insignificant, according to the trailer.

Though fans have caught a peek at the universal disorder, Marvel continues to conceal Galactus from public view.

Spectators catch a glimpse of a vague image of the planet-consuming colossus walking among a cityscape, yet the details of his entire Marvel Cinematic Universe transformation are still shrouded in secrecy.

According to the official synopsis, the film finds Marvel’s First Family at a breaking point.

In the midst of their toughest test so far, these characters find themselves juggling their heroic duties with the powerful ties of their family relationships. They are tasked with safeguarding Earth from a monstrous space deity known as Galactus and his enigmatic messenger, Silver Surfer.

Additionally, if destroying the entire planet along with all its inhabitants wasn’t already disturbing enough, it takes a turn for the worse by becoming highly personal.

The trailer not only introduces the latest version of the Silver Surfer, but it additionally reveals that Sue Storm is carrying Reed Richards’ baby.

The trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps could signal an exciting, fresh era for Marvel’s original team – however, given the reactions so far, it seems set to become one of the series’ most contentious installments.
