Fantastic Four Trailer Drops: Spot the Sneaky Superman Reference!
Just released is the official trailer for “Fantastic Four: First Steps“, and sharp-eyed fans immediately noticed an clever reference to DC Comics’ character, Superman.
In July, it’s a box office showdown between Marvel and DC as they both release films featuring their renowned characters: “The Fantastic Four: First Footsteps” and “Superman.
As a die-hard comics enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a thrill when considering the upcoming movies featuring my favorite characters from Marvel’s illustrious First Family and DC’s iconic pantheon of legends. These heroes have been the bedrock of their comic book worlds, and their silver-screen appearances promise an experience that is nothing short of extraordinary.
The freshly unveiled trailer for “First Steps” offered fans a more detailed glimpse into the female Silver Surfer character and this version of the team, subtly hinting at the potential appearance of the Man of Steel.
The Thing Resembles Superman in New Trailer
One memorable scene from the trailer of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” features Ebon Moss-Bachrach, portraying Ben Grimm (also known as The Thing), mirroring a famous comic book image – specifically, the cover of issue #1 of “Action Comics“.
With children shouting encouragement like “Raise the car! Raise the car!”, The Thing effortlessly lifts a green Volkswagen Beetle, reminiscent of Superman’s iconic pose on the 1938 cover of Action Comics #1, where he first appeared.
The Easter egg isn’t simply a clever wink to fans; it carries symbolism as well. Much like the initial appearance of Superman in that image, this subtle reference gracefully signals The Thing’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Why Fantastic Four Nods At Superman
The trailer for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” pays tribute to the first issue of “Action Comics,” symbolically connecting the roots of Marvel and DC’s primary superheroes.
This subtle tribute acknowledges Superman’s first appearance in 1938 as well as emphasizing The Thing’s entrance into the Marvel Universe, depicted within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Additionally, the trailer reveals Ben Grimm hauling a boat, hinting that his rocky form will soon be among the powerful Avengers team members.
The depth of this comic book crossover is enhanced even more with the simultaneous launch of James Gunn’s Superman, as it has just validated a shift in the character’s established history.
Gunn’s upcoming movie will introduce a retro-futuristic cityscape called Metropolis, reimagined in a revamped DC universe alongside characters such as Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, and Green Lantern. A detailed peek at the golden Metropolis is coming soon; however, Gunn encourages fans to exercise patience.
In both the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the DC Universe (DCU), these crucial characters made their initial appearances at the same time. This simultaneous event highlights a resurgence of comic book movies, where the main studios are not only respecting their origins but also blazing new trails for future developments.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps stretches into theaters on July 25, 2025.
