It’s a common story in superhero comics for heroes to have an evil twin – whether that’s a clone, a split personality, a version from another universe, or a genuinely wicked sibling. Almost every hero has faced a dark reflection of themselves. Sue Storm, also known as the Invisible Woman from the Fantastic Four, is familiar with this idea, having battled an alternate version of herself called Malice. But a recent comic book introduced an even more disturbing counterpart to the Invisible Woman.
Fantastic Four #8, written by Ryan North and illustrated by Humberto Ramos, continues the ‘Invincible Woman’ story arc. The team received a mysterious message from Galactus, the cosmic being known as the Devourer of Worlds, which led them into space. The message was short and to the point: “Find Susan Storm.”
This issue doesn’t reveal the message’s true meaning until close to the end. Most of Fantastic Four #8 focuses on recounting Sue Storm’s backstory – or, rather, the origin of a Sue Storm whose life took a troubling turn at a key moment.
The dark origin of Fantastic Four’s Invincible Woman
I’ve always known Sue Richards was incredible, but apparently, even she hadn’t realized the full extent of her abilities. Reed believed she could do so much more than just turn invisible – if she could manipulate light, why not all energy? They started training together, and it was amazing to see Sue learn to control not just light, but also magnetic fields. It was like watching a whole new level of power unfold.
I was absolutely floored when I learned that Sue’s powers didn’t turn off even while she was sleeping. It led to something truly awful. She had this terrible nightmare – she was fighting an endless wave of supervillains. And when she woke up… it was horrifying. She’d unknowingly used her powers in the dream, and it turned out she’d accidentally wiped out almost the entire population of Earth. It’s just… devastating.
The only person who survived besides her was her brother, Johnny. His abilities shielded him when she accidentally made everyone on Earth immune to heat, causing them to freeze immediately. Overwhelmed and unable to find a solution to undo the disaster, Sue pleaded with the last remaining member of the Fantastic Four to use his powers to perform a lobotomy on her.
This version of Sue managed to deceive the Human Torch. Instead of targeting the part of her brain responsible for her powers, she led him to damage the area controlling her empathy.
Free from the burden of destroying her home world, this Sue Storm traveled into space. It’s still a mystery how she ended up in the primary Marvel universe (Earth-616), but one thing is clear: the Fantastic Four are about to face a huge challenge from this powerful version of the Invisible Woman, who calls herself the Invincible Woman.
