Fans continue to critique WWE Speed

As a long-time wrestling fan with countless hours spent watching matches, analyzing storylines, and following the careers of my favorite superstars, I can’t help but feel a mix of disappointment and frustration when it comes to WWE Speed. It feels like we’re witnessing a dilution of the art form that is professional wrestling, with top performers being pushed into shorter, less impactful matches just to serve as a cash grab for the WWE and Twitter under Elon Musk’s leadership.

1. Critics continue to question the WWE’s “division” known as WWE Speed, which is a result of their collaboration with Twitter. This format showcases wrestling matches in brief durations, typically between one and five minutes. To many fans, it feels disrespectful to see top performers compress their artistry in this way. In essence, it appears that the WWE is merely exploiting this opportunity as Twitter aims to expand its video platform under Elon Musk’s leadership.

Last Friday, the bracket for the WWE Women’s Speed Championship Tournament was unveiled, featuring some notable names: Lyra Valkyria, IYO SKY, Naomi, Blair Davenport, Elektra Lopez, Kairi Sane, Candice LeRae, and Piper Niven. This group boasts several champions and entertainers with dedicated fanbases. However, it seems that some of them have been having trouble getting screen time on TV. In fact, it’s been over a month since either Candice LeRae or Piper Niven appeared in a televised match. Valkyria had been gaining momentum while Becky Lynch was still active in WWE, but with Lynch’s departure from the company, her rise seems to have slowed significantly.

From my perspective as a gamer, some folks might say that Ricochet’s exit from WWE was due to his role in WWE Speed. My buddy Will Ospreay openly criticized the concept of him participating in such swift battles. Fast forward a few months, and it looks like Ricochet is about to make his big entrance in AEW.

WWE Speed is simply another demonstration that Endeavor aims to maximize its earnings from WWE. Regardless of whether fans tune in for sports or wrestling, the people making the decisions are focused on enhancing an already profitable financial situation. The opinions of fans regarding booking and usage are irrelevant when money keeps flowing in from deals like this one.

As a passionate WWE fan, I see WWE Speed as a potential stepping stone for emerging stars to shine brighter than ever before. The power of virality is undeniable – WWE always takes note when a superstar gains traction online. For instance, Joe Hendry’s popular moments on NXT earlier this year have catapulted him into the heart of the collaboration between NXT and TNA.

It’s no surprise that wrestling enthusiasts yearn for top-notch performances from their favorite athletes. WWE Speed might not deliver this, and the reaction to it has been evident. However, if appropriate adjustments are made, these matches could potentially lead to significant television moments. If not, the criticism will persist.
