Fans are only just realising what ‘iconic’ role Smithy’s jilted lover Sonia had before her Gavin and Stacey appearance
As a long-time fan of Gavin and Stacey, I must say that the recent finale was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride of emotions! With a five-year time jump and the surprise return of beloved characters like Rudi and Cath, it felt like revisiting old friends after a long absence. Yet, the most heartwarming moment for me was Smithy’s journey from almost marrying the wrong woman to realizing his love for Nessa at last.
Being a hopeless romantic myself, I can relate to Smithy’s indecisiveness and confusion when it comes to matters of the heart. The way the story unfolded over 17 years was a testament to the writers’ ability to create characters that feel real and relatable. The twists and turns of their love story made me laugh, cry, and cheer for them all at once!
And let’s not forget the classic humor that made Gavin and Stacey so endearing in the first place – the family dynamics, the quirky one-liners, and the hilarious misunderstandings. The show managed to strike a perfect balance between drama and comedy, making it an absolute joy to watch.
In the end, I was left with a warm, fuzzy feeling that only comes from seeing two characters finally finding their happily ever after. And as for the finale’s unexpected twist – well, who would have thought that Stacey’s dad could be so romantic? It just goes to show that sometimes, even the most stoic among us can surprise those around us!
Now, if only they could somehow convince Ruth Jones and James Corden to make another season… I’d be first in line for tickets!
Actress Laura Aikman, well-known for her role in Gavin & Stacey, had already made a mark on television with a popular CBBC series from the 90s, which many viewers of that era are just beginning to recognize.
In the final episode of Gavin and Stacey, broadcasted on Christmas Day, Smithy’s (James Corden’s character) former lover, Sonia, unexpectedly reappeared as his intended bride.
The news of Sonia’s comeback took everyone by surprise across the country. Actress Laura was kept discreetly at another lodging while shooting, under an NDA agreement to preserve a significant storyline revelation.
Now that Laura, known as Sonia on TV, has reappeared, viewers from the ’90s are recognizing another famous character she played: Mysti from The Mysti Show.
As a devoted fan, I’ve been reminiscing on my childhood memories with the Mysti show, and it’s no secret that my affection for Laura Aikman in Gavin & Stacey stems from this connection. #GavinAndStacey
In a different post on TikTok, Laura Aikman mentioned: ‘Although Sonia might be the unforgettable character associated with Laura Aikman, it was someone else who stood by her side at the altar…’
In reference to the retro image, it was stated, ‘Mysti was our icon from the 90s/early 2000s for us.’
The Mysti Show aired from April 2004 to December 2005.
The show saw Laura take on the role of a half-human half-fairy being called Mysti.
In every thrilling 20-minute segment, I was completely captivated by Mysti’s mesmerizing fusion of amusement and dramatic comedy, graced by the starry presence of esteemed guests.
2000 marked the time when Laura made an appearance on the long-lasting medical drama, “Casualty”. This role was the starting point for a string of guest appearances, which included spots on “The Bill”, “Doctors”, and “That Mitchell And Webb Look”.
However, in 2009, she landed her initial pair of continuous characters, portraying Lucy in the popular BBC Three series titled Personal Affairs, and importantly, reprising her role in Casualty, appearing now as Nurse May Phelps.
In the year 2016, I landed my third significant television role, where I was chosen to portray Lorna Hutchinson in the tenth season of the BBC’s dramatic series, Waterloo Road.
Among my small-screen ventures, I’ve made memorable guest appearances on shows like Death In Paradise, Pramface, Citizen Khan, and Bluestone 42. It was during my time on the latter that I crossed paths with my beloved husband, Matt Kennard, in the year 2015.
However, the nation was taken aback when it was revealed that Laura had transformed into Sonia – a secret that remained hidden even from her own family, who discovered it only by watching on Christmas Day.
On Boxing Day, the actress posted a video on Instagram showing the instant her surprised parents discovered a big secret.
She posted, along with a funny video, “‘The instant my loved ones discover that Sonia is spoiling Christmas once more…
As she abruptly sat upright and jabbed a finger at the screen, her mother gasped audibly, exclaiming, “Good heavens! What’s this? You didn’t mention it to us!
Overflowing with giggles, Laura replied: “We’ve never shared this secret with anyone!” as the rest of her family echoed their astonishment in the background.
Laura emphasized that she respects NDAs very much, using the hashtags ‘#gavinandstaceythefinale’ and ‘#gavinandstacey’.
After the final episode aired, Christine Gernon (Gavin and Stacey’s director) shared on Instagram the extraordinary steps she had gone to great lengths to keep her return a secret.
Laura was photographed with Alison Steadman, who plays Pam in the BBC series, and during the entire G&S shoot, the director humorously mentioned that Laura was kept out of sight. (@lauraikman)
Having spent many years in the industry, I must say that the scene you’ve described is quite common in Hollywood. Keeping a low profile upon return is often necessary for actors to maintain their privacy and avoid being swarmed by fans and the media. In Sonia’s case, it appears she pulled off an impressive comeback without anyone catching on. As someone who has worked with numerous actors, I can attest that Sonia’s talent both on and off-screen is truly remarkable. Her dedication to her craft and genuine nature make her a standout in the industry.
In simpler terms, Anna, who portrayed Sonia’s bridesmaid, revealed that they managed to keep the storyline secretive; nothing about it was disclosed until the initial reading session.
In a conversation with The Mirror, she shared that they had no prior encounters with Laura; she was kept confidential, staying in separate hotels and prohibited from participating in any pre-production activities. Essentially, she was non-existent, her name didn’t appear anywhere.
Having not received the script earlier, we were all hearing the story for the first time during the initial reading. Since we had no prior knowledge, every detail was a surprise and revelation to us.
James Corden frequently assigned Laura various aliases during the proceedings as a means to confuse others.
1. First came Katie, followed by Leticia, and finally Anna, she explained. The whole experience was mind-blowing, bizarre even, and simply amazing.
2. In this order: Katie, then Leticia, and lastly Anna – that’s the sequence she described. The situation was utterly wild, it felt like a dream, and I can’t find the words to express how incredible it was.
Five years have passed since the show’s last Christmas episode in 2019, and it was during this time that the Christmas special and series finale aired.
Previously, a scene from five years past had viewers anxiously biting their nails, eagerly anticipating Smithy’s response when Nessa knelt before him.
In the eyes of many viewers, the closing episode was deemed “flawless.” Emotions ran high as they bid farewell to a beloved series that had been airing for 17 years and concluded in this final episode.
As viewers eagerly waited to find out if Smithy would agree to Nessa’s proposal, the scene unexpectedly leaped ahead by five years, revealing that they were already preparing for marriage. However, things weren’t quite what they appeared to be.
It emerged in the previous holiday episode that Smithy secretly became engaged to his partner, Sonia. Unfortunately, the Shipman/West family found her less than impressive during their encounter.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, let me share an exciting piece of news from my recent viewing: I was thrilled to unexpectedly witness the reappearance of none other than Sheridan Smith, portraying her character as my dear friend’s sister Rudi, and the magnificent Pam Ferris graced our screens once more, embodying the role of his mom Cath.
However, on Smithy’s special day, he discovered that Nessa was indeed his one and only heart’s desire, and he cancelled the wedding instead.
As someone who has experienced the rollercoaster ride of love and loss, I can empathize with Dave’s situation in this scenario. The build-up of emotions over 17 years must have been intense for him, and the moment he decided to confront Nessa on her departure was a pivotal one. I admire his courage to express his feelings and ask her to reconsider leaving, knowing that it could change their lives forever. It takes a lot of guts to declare love at such a critical juncture, and I can only hope for the best outcome for them both.
Five years ago, I held onto a proposal from the love of my life, Smithy, thinking it was never meant to be. But as time passed, I found myself unwavering in my admiration for him. So, with a heart full of courage, I watched as he knelt before me, revisiting that old proposal and asking me once more to become his wife.
Later on, the scene switched to Smithy and Nessa finally saying their vows during a heartfelt ceremony in Barry. The show concluded with a moving sequence where family members celebrated the event at The Dolphin pub, followed by a group photo capturing them all together.
