Fans are giving Star Trek: Prodigy a lot of praise for 'fixing' a classic character

As a long-time Star Trek fan and gamer, I’ve always appreciated the depth and complexity of each character in the franchise. And among those characters, Chakotay from Voyager has held a special place in my heart. His stoic demeanor, unwavering ethics, and sense of duty have resonated with me throughout the years.

As a devoted fan of Star Trek: Prodigy, I must express my disappointment about the shift in the show’s release format during its second season. Previously streaming on Paramount+, it has now found a new home on Netflix. This change has resulted in an entirely different release strategy – instead of weekly episodes, the entire season is now dropped at once.

It appears that not everyone has watched and kept up with the episodes at the same pace, resulting in various conversation topics being scattered. A common theme arising from these discussions is how the show effectively transformed Chakotay, the commander of USS Voyager during Star Trek: Voyager’s events, into a more endearing character. Now stranded in time as a captain.

The trailer hinted that finding Chakotay would be a major focus of the new season, based on the intriguing setup presented without revealing any spoilers. Fans have expressed great enthusiasm for this character and the talented actor, Robert Beltran, bringing him to life.

I find it hard to believe that Chakotay, a character who held great significance for me during my Voyager gaming experience, was ever perceived as insignificant by others. His stoic composure might have been overlooked by some fans, but his personality and strong ethical code were pivotal elements in the show for me.

Chakotay played a pivotal role in bringing together the Maquis and Federation crews at the beginning of the show. His soothing demeanor provided tranquility when necessary, even if it didn’t always create exciting television. Nevertheless, his character was defined by honor and integrity, rarely deviating from noble conduct.

In my perspective, characters possessing such high integrity don’t necessitate being “rescued” by another show. Nevertheless, I’m thrilled that he’s part of the new Star Trek series. However, I believe his inclusion doesn’t equate to a salvage operation; instead, he was already an exceptional character.
