Fans Are All Over Watching Denzel Washington In The US, But I Was Pleased To See An Underrated Action Movie Has Blown Up On Amazon’s Top 10 List

Last month, Amazon made the highly-regarded “Gladiator II” available on its premium video platform, and in the U.S., viewers have been flocking to watch Denzel Washington‘s performance (which I think deserved an Academy Award nomination). On the other hand, following Pope Francis’ death, both domestic and international audiences have revisited “Conclave”. Yet, what has brought me the most joy is the rising popularity of a 2025 movie release.

In simpler terms, the upcoming production known as the G20 shares its star-studded cast with movies like Gladiator and Conclave, boasting Viola Davis alongside Antony Starr from The Boys, and Anthony Anderson and Marsai Martin from black-ish. While I wouldn’t go so far as to say it will be the next Die Hard, I did find the Cape Town setting and the storyline intriguing. In this tale, Davis portrays a female President of the United States grappling with her rebellious daughter. TopMob’s Philip Sledge described it as a “wild throwback,” and I can certainly see why!

Instead of attending a Summit that has global leaders under scrutiny for alleged corruption, they choose to take their child to an event that’s currently the world’s most popular movie on Amazon, dubbed as the G20 Summit. Doesn’t sound like a fun outing, but it’s apparently captivating audiences worldwide.

US Audiences Are Into Something A Little Different Than Global Audiences

Interestingly, while Gladiator II claimed the number one spot in the US on April 24th, according to sources like FlixPatrol, the popularity of movies hasn’t been as widespread, as it was for G20. Intriguingly, Amazon Prime has also introduced a second major film featuring Denzel Washington this month, the somewhat overlooked 2 Guns, co-starring Mark Wahlberg. Unlike G20, 2 Guns is not a fresh release, having originally hit theaters in 2013 and receiving positive reviews. If you’re into buddy-cop action dramas, it might be worth checking out.

In April 2025, the series titled “2 Guns” made its debut on a streaming platform. It rapidly climbed to the Top 10 list but eventually dropped from it after a short while.

Amazon Prime Originals often stay at the top of the charts for extended periods, as demonstrated by titles such as Red One. Interestingly, Amazon is distinguishing itself from other streaming platforms by embracing the cinematic experience. They plan to release several of their upcoming movies in theaters before they become available on streaming services. This was first evident during Amazon’s CinemaCon panel in 2025, marking the first time a streaming service has attended such an event. It is hoped that more mid-budget films like G20 will receive a grand premiere in the future.

For now though, ranking on the Top 10 list isn’t too shabby.
