Fan-favourite Stranger Things stars reunite in new Netflix mystery drama, in big cast announcement

Netflix is adding new actors to the cast of its upcoming series based on Liz Moore’s novel, The God of the Woods. Fans of Stranger Things will be excited to hear that some of its stars will be reuniting in this new mystery drama.

Maya Hawke, known for her role as Robin Buckley in the popular sci-fi series, will star in the new show as Judy Luptack. Luptack is a groundbreaking character – the first woman to become an investigator at the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which was traditionally a male-only workplace.

Nell Fisher, who recently appeared in Stranger Things as Holly Wheeler, is joining the cast of The God of the Woods. She’ll be playing the character Barbara Van Laar.

The story, The God of the Woods, begins when Barbara vanishes from summer camp. Detective Judy Hawke takes on the case, but the investigation is complicated by the powerful Van Laar family, who are hiding troubling secrets.

Kerry Condon, known for her roles in films like The Banshees of Inisherin and Train Dreams, stars as Alice, the mother figure in the family. Her character is stuck in an unhappy marriage with Peter, played by Benjamin Walker. The cast also includes Damon Gupton, Ella Rubin, Susannah Perkins, and Autumn Molina.

What to Read Next

Along with Liz Hannah, Moore is a showrunner, writer, and executive producer on the series. They shared with Tudum that they hope viewers will become as invested in the characters – both loving and disliking them – as they are.

The series, The God of the Woods, is a multigenerational drama unfolding in the Adirondack mountains. It centers on the Van Laar family, revealing their hidden secrets and the conflicts arising from their social standing, all while investigating the puzzling disappearance of 13-year-old Barbara from their summer camp.

The story hints at a past family tragedy that connects to the events happening now. It follows the Van Laar family as their wealth and status begin to crumble, exposing the negative effects of their privilege and how they’ve misused their power.

Published in 2024, Moore’s novel received widespread praise from both critics and readers. Even Stephen King, a renowned author, admitted he couldn’t stop reading it, finding it impossible to put down by page 200 (according to Amazon).

The God of the Woods does not currently have a release window, but will air on Netflix.
