Family Matters star Darius McCrary released from prison after being arrested near US-Mexico border

Darius McCrary, known for his role on the show ‘Family Matters,’ is out of prison after being held for about two months. He was arrested close to the border between the United States and Mexico.

The 49-year-old actor initially faced legal issues near Tijuana in October. He was detained without the possibility of bail and later sent to Michigan to answer to five felony charges.

On Monday, McCrary admitted guilt to charges of failing to pay child support and running away from legal obligations. He will be back in court for sentencing in February 2026.

The Daily Mail has reached out to McCrary’s representatives for comment and have yet to hear back.

According to Mr. McCrary’s lawyer, Paulette Loftin, recent accusations that his pursuit of justice was a way to avoid supporting his child have been proven false. Loftin told TMZ on Tuesday that today’s outcome demonstrates the importance of family.

The actor became famous for his role as Eddie Winslow on the popular 1990s sitcom, Family Matters, where he starred with Jaleel White, Reginald VelJohnson, and Jo Marie Payton.

His recent legal troubles started on October 5th when he was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

The judge decided the actor, originally from Walnut, California, still posed a risk of fleeing the country. He was arrested because Michigan issued a warrant for his arrest related to a serious crime.

The actor, known for his role in ‘Monogamy,’ initially stated he would represent himself in court and didn’t want a lawyer assigned by the court. However, the judge decided to appoint a public defender to assist him.

McCrary was eventually brought back to Michigan to face the original arrest warrant, which was issued because he failed to appear in court regarding unpaid child support.

Initially, reports differed about why the actor from The Young and the Restless was even there.

According to ABC 10 News, prosecutors stated that McCrary’s agent said he was in Tijuana looking at properties to buy.

According to his lawyer, McCrary was in the neighborhood working on a charity project building homes.

According to the actor’s representative, McCrary isn’t likely to flee because he has no ties to the Tijuana region, according to People magazine.

According to the representative, McCrary ended up in the wrong country due to a misunderstanding about where to meet his colleague for the Esperanza housing program.

According to his representative, McCrary plans to fight the charges in Michigan and is scheduled for a court appearance on November 14th.

This isn’t the first time McCrary has had legal trouble. He was previously arrested in 2015 and 2023 for not keeping up with child support payments.

Okay, so, it all started with his divorce from Tammy Brawner. Honestly, it was a mess. They fought for two whole years in court, and it finally wrapped up in 2019, but that’s really where all his legal troubles began, as far as I can tell. It’s just been downhill since then, and it all goes back to that awful split!

As part of their divorce agreement, the actor was ordered to pay $1,366 per month in child support.

In January 2023, McCrary obtained a restraining order against his former partner, claiming she was harassing and frightening him.

He had requested a restraining order back in August 2022, but the court rejected it because he didn’t show up for the hearing.

McCrary stated he couldn’t attend the hearing because he had to leave his home to escape an ex-partner.

The actor stated that he had to leave his home because of physical, verbal, and emotional abuse from his former partner.

He claimed she transformed their former home into a place where drugs were used, and after going abroad for rehab, she came back and put his possessions in storage, then wouldn’t return them to him.

According to McCrary, the last thing that made him decide he’d had enough was in December, when she supposedly threatened to take his dog unless he paid her.

He also expressed fear for his safety, comparing his situation to that of Phil Hartman, a former Saturday Night Live cast member who was tragically killed by his wife in 1998.

I’ll never forget Jaleel White as Steve Urkel’s neighbor, Eddie Winslow, on Family Matters. He was everywhere in the ’90s – a truly iconic teen actor that everyone knew and loved! He really became a star thanks to that role.

The popular TV show aired from 1989 to 1998, and McCrary successfully acted alongside well-known stars like White, VelJohnson, and Payton.

He was famous for being funny and engaging, and his performance was a major reason the show became so popular and memorable.

Although he charmed audiences as Eddie Winslow, Keshia Knight Pulliam’s recent legal troubles demonstrate that real life is often more complicated than her former role on a popular sitcom.
