Fallout’s Walton Goggins Explains How The Ghoul Reflects Real-World Parallels in Season 2

The popular series is returning for Season 2 in just over a year and a half after its debut. It won praise from both video game enthusiasts and general audiences, and the cast and crew were able to quickly begin production on the new season despite their other commitments.

The new season picks up after the dramatic events of the first season finale, launching the characters into a fresh and risky storyline. For Cooper Howard, a popular character known as The Ghoul, this season promises even more excitement. The actor recently shared that while the show isn’t intentionally political, his character reflects aspects of real-world situations and people.

After exploring Cooper’s backstory, Goggins described his character as someone we can all relate to. He explained that Cooper is overwhelmed by information he can’t control and is realizing the world he thought he knew has changed. Goggins sees Cooper as a normal person simply trying to understand something that is fundamentally incomprehensible, and that chaotic reality is what drives his actions.

He explained that the show isn’t intentionally political, meaning the writers aren’t trying to push a specific agenda. Instead, the story naturally aligns with current events, and its relevance is more a matter of timing than deliberate messaging. That’s essentially the approach they took with Fallout.

Goggins explained that they tackle difficult subjects by using humor, satire, and then showing the actual impact of those issues.

Season 2 follows Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell) as she travels to New Vegas in search of her husband and child. This storyline, according to the creators, is central to the show’s themes and mirrors the core messages of the Fallout game series.

Goggins pointed out that there are many conflicting groups, much like in the world today. Everyone simply has a different idea of how to fix things, and we all hold those individual solutions within ourselves.

Walton Goggins Compared The Ghoul With His White Lotus Character

Goggins said he doubted his character would survive, suggesting he’d outlast his counterpart from The White Lotus. He explained that Rick, being immature and confrontational, would likely pick fights with everyone and wouldn’t last long.

Fallout returns for Season 2 on Dec. 17.
