Falcons kyxsan on m0NESY: “The biggest thing that I’m surprised about is his communication”

Kyxsan praises his whole squad for keeping their cool as Falcons march to the playoffs.

In an intense battle during the group stage of IEM Melbourne, Damjan “kyxsan” Stoilkovski and his team Falcons managed to defeat Natus Vincere with a score of 2-1 (9-13, 13-11, 13-4), securing their place at the Rod Laver Arena.

The series was an awe-inspiring spectacle, filled with remarkable comebacks and decisive swing rounds. However, what truly stood out was the outstanding performance of Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov, who racked up an astonishing 57 kills and boasted a 1.39 rating for the series. He was the pivotal factor in the Falcons’ miraculous comeback on Mirage, turning a 5-11 deficit into a tie before they went on a winning streak, securing victory by winning 23 out of the last 27 rounds.

Following the match, Kyxsan conversed with Xpsp, sharing that m0NESY, the 24-year-old Macedonian team captain, has had limited opportunity to acclimate to the Falcons’ rhythm. Despite this, he has full confidence in his top-tier marksman and was taken aback by a particular aspect of his AWPer skills that he hadn’t encountered at this level before.

Kyxsan, Falcons begin building momentum as IEM Melbourne playoffs beckon

Prior to delving into the NaVi match, I’d like to acknowledge your impressive play during the SAW opener. With that said, could you share what your personal and team expectations were when you arrived in Melbourne?

Initially, we arrived without any specific expectations since it was our first match featuring m0NESY and we hadn’t had much time to prepare before Melbourne. However, I must admit that my individual performance has improved recently. I’m not entirely sure why, but I believe it’s positively impacting the team.

Now, I feel like our faith in each other has grown somewhat. This mutual trust seems to be strengthening our performances during calls, decisions at the end of rounds, and overall gameplay.

Discussing the thrilling NaVi series was an exhilarating experience. We witnessed incredible comebacks, nerve-wracking clutch rounds…what can one say when facing a 11-5 deficit against NaVi on their choice of Mirage? How do you manage to recover such a game?

The NaVi series was nothing short of spectacular. We saw impressive comebacks, tense clutch moments…what conversation ensues when you’re trailing 11-5 against NaVi on their map pick of Mirage? How do you even attempt to stage a comeback in such a situation?

As a gamer, here’s my take on it: “When things seemed bleak for us, what kept us going was the unwavering belief in one another. We knew deep down that we had the potential to turn things around. That resilience, I believe, is the defining trait of this team.

In essence, Ilya seems promising from the outset; his contributions to the team have been evident right away. This has made it more plausible for us to trust one another and have faith in dramatic turnarounds during each match. It boosts our self-assurance.

Following your lead on Mirage, you managed to gain an advantage and keep NaVi at bay on Dust 2. Did there happen to be many conversations and exchanges aimed at preventing NaVi from staging a counter-comeback themselves?

Absolutely, we had a substantial advantage on Dust 2, but instead of getting overconfident, we maintained our composure and never considered the game as already won. This allowed us to continue playing as we typically do. I believe zonic played a crucial role in keeping us calm, his cool demeanor significantly contributing to this victory.

In this season, this was the initial face-off between the two teams (Falcons), and it was undeniably an extraordinary match. Could this be the spark that ignites a small rivalry between them? What level of preparation went into this series, specifically considering NaVi?

It seems like we put in a solid effort preparing for the game, despite having less time due to the late finish of the previous match. We managed to prepare our strategy and focus on what we anticipated they would choose, so I believe we were well-prepared. We also gathered some valuable insights about their playing style; although it didn’t pay off in the first map, I think our predictions were spot on. Even though we lost, I think our strategies were sound.

We faced situations where they approached us with a group of three to four players, but unfortunately, we weren’t able to complete the matches. However, I believe our preparations were excellent, and in the long run, they proved effective.

We’ve heard that your collaboration with m0NESY was primarily focused on fundamental strategies and callouts over a short period of time. Given that you’ve played just two best-of-threes so far, do you believe our team’s playbook will need adjustments to accommodate m0NESY, or are you finding that he can easily fit into his role?

It seems that he could easily fit into the team since the position might not require much adjustment, as it appears to be one of the least complex roles due to the fact that only an AWPer occupies this spot and the overall structure remains unchanged.

M0NESY is incredibly astute in his gaming skills, possessing vast knowledge of the game mechanics and utilities across various maps. Given his quick comprehension of our strategies, I believe we won’t need to make significant adjustments to our playbook. Instead, it seems that he’s primarily adapting to our style and learning about us.

How does m0NESY stand out compared to other AWPers you’ve collaborated with in the past, such as degster, within HEROIC, or nawwk at Apeks, in terms of their unique characteristics and playing styles?

What strikes me most is his exceptional communication skills. While it’s undeniable that he’s a master of the game, let’s focus on another aspect: his remarkable ability to aid the team in every conceivable manner.

Regardless of the stage in the game, actions such as flashing, smoking, or rotating are common among all AWPers. However, what he’s doing seems to be on a higher level, if I may put it that way.

After acquiring m0NESY and NiKo, and with Falcons having won a significant trophy at PGL Bucharest, are you feeling any extra stress to excel since you’re already set for playoffs in Melbourne, given the presence of these prominent figures and prestigious awards?

As a gamer on our team, I acknowledge the weight of expectation that comes with having NiKo and m0NESY on our roster. Teams boasting these players are typically expected to bring home trophies, but we’re trying not to let that burden our minds. Instead, we’re focusing on enjoying the game itself and playing to the best of our abilities, hoping for the best outcomes along the way.
