F1: The Movie spoilers follow.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel a glimmer of hope when the director of F1: The Movie, Joseph Kosinski, hinted at the prospect of a sequel. He mentioned that it all depends on the response from us, the audience.
This movie focuses on the story of racer Sonny Hayes, portrayed by Brad Pitt, who makes a comeback to Formula 1 after more than three decades. As a seasoned driver, he faces challenges with a struggling team and a cocky teammate named Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris.
After premiering in movie theaters on June 25th, the film has demonstrated impressive commercial performance, earning more than $144 million globally during its first five days of release.
Despite needing more progress to surpass its estimated $200 million budget, the successful initial release has sparked queries about a possible sequel. In fact, director Kosinski hinted at a sequel’s possibility when he spoke with Entertainment Weekly, expressing that there was potential for continuation.

The filmmaker, known for directing the hit movie “Top Gun: Maverick”, expressed that whether people choose to watch more of it is ultimately the audience’s decision. He shared his fondness for the team he worked with and the experience of creating their own Formula One team. Eagerly anticipating what lies ahead for APXGP and Sonny Hayes, he expressed his excitement for future projects.
In his subsequent discussion, Kosinski, known for directing both “Oblivion” and “Only the Brave,” delved deeper into the reasoning behind the movie’s concluding scene where Sonny chooses to part ways with Formula One racing and instead takes on a rally race in Mexico.

Following this revelation about the central character’s lingering effects from a severe injury sustained during his initial Formula 1 tenure, Kosinski implies that Sonny is an individual who consistently embraces risk and lives life in a daring manner.
He expressed, “I believe that’s an excellent path for him, but I’m doubtful it’s something we’ll see happening soon.” Translating further, he implied, “For him, the question is always ‘what’s next? What new peak can I conquer?’ Baja is nothing like Formula 1 – it would certainly be thrilling to imagine him participating in it.
