F1 star Damson Idris reveals first details about Simone Ashley’s cut role
In a recent interview, actor Damson Idris shared additional insights regarding the reduced screen presence of Simone Ashley in the movie The Movie.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t wait to dive into the high-octane world of “Grid,” a Formula 1 racing film directed by the visionary Joseph Kosinski. This action-packed ride stars none other than Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Tobias Menzies, and Kerry Condon, alongside the talented Idris Elba, who you might recognize from his gripping performances in “Black Mirror.
In this movie, based on actual Formula One drivers, the story unfolds with Brad Pitt portraying Sonny Hayes, an ex-racer who comes out of retirement to guide young racing newcomer, Joshua “Noah” Pearce, played by Idris.

It came to light last week that Ashley’s part in the movie was significantly reduced, leaving only minimal screen time for her, the Bridgerton actress. In the final cut, she will make a brief appearance with no spoken lines.
When asked for his opinion on Ashley’s role reduction, Idris shared with Buzzfeed UK: “I must say, I have a deep affection for Simone, both personally and professionally. I believe she’s incredibly gifted and extremely talented.
To put it simply, I was only there for a brief moment, almost like a guest appearance. My character became involved in a romantic subplot, if you will.
Similar to several films, there’s often a director’s edit. To clarify, I’ve found myself not included in some productions, and that’s just the way it goes sometimes.
Speaking about a potential future project, Idris expressed his eagerness to team up with Ashley once more. He mentioned, “It’s exciting to think that she will collaborate not just with Joseph Kosinski again, but undoubtedly with me as well.
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Kosinski also discussed reducing Ashley’s part. He explained that this is common practice on movie sets, stating, “On every film, there’s always more footage shot than can be used.
He clarified that a few plotlines did not end up in the final version of the film. However, he expressed his admiration for Simone, praising her exceptional acting, singing abilities, and stated that he hopes to collaborate with her once more.
F1: The Movie is released in UK cinemas on 25 June and in US cinemas on 27 June.
