Adam Sandler is a remarkably talented performer. While he’s most famous for his comedy, he’s also a skilled actor who shines in both funny movies like Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison, and more serious roles in films such as Uncut Gems and Hustle. Those who work with him say he’s generally relaxed on set, but Sandler recently revealed one type of scene he really hates – so much so that he swore when talking about it.
Adam Sandler recently joined a discussion with The Hollywood Reporter where he talked about his new movie, Jay Kelly, now available on Netflix. He also shared some insights into his acting process, revealing that he particularly dislikes filming scenes that require him to cry. He explained the reasons why these moments are challenging for him.
When a script calls for my character to have a really intense, uncontrollable crying scene, I dread it. It’s tough because I rarely cry in real life – I’ve maybe cried once ever. This movie had three or four of those scenes, and leading up to them, I’d get really anxious, thinking, ‘This is going to be awful. I won’t be able to pull it off.’
It’s easy to see why it would be tough for an actor to film a crying scene. Some actors can cry on cue, but it’s not something everyone can do. The idea of having to cry for a role feels really difficult to me, so I understand where the Waterboy actor is coming from. That said, I think Adam Sandler has consistently delivered convincing and emotional performances when a scene calls for it.
As a big fan, I’ve noticed Adam Sandler really knows how to make you feel things, even in his comedies. But it’s in his more dramatic roles where he truly shines. I remember being totally gutted in Click when his character found out his dad had passed away – he really sells that grief. And Reign Over Me? Heartbreaking. He delivers this incredibly raw monologue about his family, and you can just see the pain on his face. But honestly, one of the most intense crying scenes I’ve ever seen was in Uncut Gems. It was almost frantic, and that movie deserved some serious Oscar recognition, in my opinion.
Noah Baumbach, who wrote and directed the film, asked Adam Sandler to bring emotional depth to his role as Ron Sukenick, the main character’s manager. Sandler delivered a nuanced performance and is now gaining recognition, with some predicting a possible Oscar nomination. However, Sandler has said he’s simply pleased to be working with Baumbach again.
Adam Sandler claims he doesn’t cry easily in real life, but I think he’d be thrilled – and probably tearful – if he won a big award this year. What’s really impressive is his ability to convincingly portray sadness on screen, even though he doesn’t enjoy it. Hopefully, he’ll keep delivering those emotional performances and continue to demonstrate his versatility as an actor.
