Even though musicians might get all the attention due to their popular songs, the visual artists responsible for designing album covers, tour posters, and music videos frequently work behind the scenes. The Center for Contemporary Art & Culture at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon is bringing these underappreciated talents into the limelight with an exhibition titled Eyes and Ears: A Survey of Visuals in Music 2020-2024.
Under the guidance of Bijan Berahimi, founder of the diverse FISK studio, this exhibit features an extensive variety of music memorabilia such as vinyl covers, tour promotional materials, merchandise, and a rotation of music videos jointly curated by Noah Porter. Instead of being a fixed display, this exhibition is dynamic, with Berahimi regularly updating the content to present a wide range of musical genres and visual styles from the last four years.
The showcased creations encompass various fields – graphic design, photography, art direction, and film – showcasing the impactful work of artists like Bethany Vargas, Bráulio Amado, Clare Gillen, FISK, Imogene Strauss, Loris Russier, Noah Porter, PlayLab Inc., rubberband, Zhamak Fullad, and others. Notable pieces feature the highly feminine, Barbie-inspired visuals for Charli XCX’s brat summer and the rugged, biker-culture vibe of Don Toliver’s Hardstone Psycho.
Berahimi points out that visual creations in the music industry from the past four years are exceptional. However, he laments that due to the swift pace of modern media, these projects often fail to receive the appreciation they deserve beyond brief social media posts. This exhibition offers visitors a chance to truly savor these works as intended – by holding vinyl records, viewing posters at their original size, and delving deeply into the artistry that paints the musician’s universe.
