Exterritorial’s Shocking Twist Was Almost Perfect—But There’s One Major Flaw!

HEADS UP! The ensuing article discloses significant plot points from the action-packed series “Exterritorial“. If you haven’t had a chance to watch this gripping thriller yet, I strongly recommend you do so with your active Netflix subscription before proceeding. Enjoy the ride!

This year, Netflix has been delivering an impressive lineup of intense and impactful action films. Ranging from the unexpected success of “Ad Vitum” at the beginning of the 2025 movie schedule to the long-awaited “Havoc” starring Tom Hardy, action movie enthusiasts have had plenty to savor. The latest addition to this list is “Exterritorial“, a gripping German thriller revolving around a former soldier who loses her son at the American Consulate.

As a devoted admirer, I must say that “Exterritorial” boasts an impressive setup, jaw-dropping fight scenes, and a narrative that delves deep into some troubling territories without flinching from mental health themes. Yet, there’s one aspect that left me feeling somewhat unsettled. So, let’s discuss the one alteration I would propose for this extraordinary film, but first, allow me to extol its virtues…

Exterritorial Has A Gripping Story And Some Of The Best Action I’ve Seen All Year

As a cinema enthusiast, I’ve immersed myself in an abundance of action flicks this year, with a significant chunk being 2025 Netflix productions. Amongst them all, the movie Exterritorial stands out as it boasts one of the most captivating narratives and some of the finest action sequences I’ve seen. The tale revolves around Sara, a former German Special Forces operative, who finds herself in a desperate mission to locate her kidnapped son within the American Consulate – an environment where German laws have no jurisdiction. This character, expertly crafted by the writers, truly comes alive through Jeanne Goursau’s exceptional portrayal.

As I found myself engrossed in the plot, I couldn’t help but question who was reliable as the story unfolded. Even Sara, still grappling with the lingering effects of post-traumatic stress from her tours in Afghanistan, left me guessing. The narrative, punctuated by action scenes reminiscent of the John Wick series, kept me on my toes with unexpected twists and turns right up until the final credits rolled.

But The Reveal About Sara’s Son’s Disappearance Was So Unoriginal

Let me clarify, while I found the film’s initial scenes satisfactory due to the over-the-top action sequences, I was left underwhelmed by the explanation for Sara’s son being taken by the Americans. Towards the end of the movie, it is disclosed that Eric Kynch (Dougray Scott), in charge of security at the consulate, had orchestrated the kidnapping from the start to eliminate Sara because she knew about his treachery – betraying his country and leaking sensitive data to the Taliban.

It seems as if I’ve watched numerous films where the antagonist devises an elaborate scheme to silence someone who might expose them, thus avoiding trouble. For a film that promised intrigue and delved into deep psychological themes, the conclusion felt clichéd and disappointingly predictable.

I Wish The Movie Had Instead Taken A More Psychological Approach, Which It Teased Multiple Times

In the movie “Exterritorial”, it’s evident that the protagonist Sara, as hinted in the trailer, grapples with severe PTSD and often struggles to discern reality from illusion, enriching the narrative. Regrettably, these intriguing foreshadowings (such as the one showing Sara’s son being erased from all security footage, making it seem like she’s gone mad) ultimately prove insignificant.

I believe the movie could’ve had a greater impact if it focused more intensely on the psychological thriller genre and provided a less optimistic ending. This might have made it a more intense and melancholic film, but it would have given us an unexpectedly thrilling finale that wouldn’t seem too sudden due to its early, suspenseful scenes.

Did the conclusion of “Exterritorial” slightly disappoint me? Not entirely. However, it prevented the otherwise engaging action film from becoming an exceptional and unforgettable thriller in my opinion.
