Exposed Nine stars fear internal 'witch hunt' after bravely coming forward with confronting allegations of systemic harassment and bullying at toxic network

As I read through these heart-wrenching accounts of workplace harassment and bullying at Nine, I can’t help but feel deeply saddened and angry. It’s disheartening to see how such a respected organization could allow its culture to become so toxic and harmful.

EXCLUSIVE

9 employees are worried that they might be singled out and reprimanded by online harassers, following a supposed “witch hunt,” as they bravely spoke up about the problematic work environment within their organization’s newsroom.

Across the nation, there’s a great deal of anger following an investigation into persistent bullying and harassment within a company. The probe didn’t suggest terminating any of the accused individuals.

According to a report from the workplace culture company Intersection, it was found that Nine faced a pervasive problem involving misuse of power and position, as well as instances of bullying, discrimination, and sexual harassment.

However, the management at the network indicated that employees must recount their traumatic events once more and undergo a second, in-house complaint procedure prior to any actions being initiated.

According to reports, individuals who decided to share their views provided detailed, personal testimonies during the probe. Now, they are concerned that the higher-ups implicated might seek retaliation against them.

Even though the identities of both parties involved were concealed in the report, there was still a wealth of detailed and open information that became public upon its release on Thursday, causing many to feel vulnerable or exposed.

It was reported by Daily Mail Australia that an insider expressed frustration, stating: “Initially, we were led to believe that this investigation would transform Nine’s culture. However, now we learn that no real actions will be implemented.

Currently, people are publicly dissecting the personal aspects of our grievances, a process that has tragically re-victimized numerous individuals. Instead, it seems like they’re engaging in an intrusive game of deduction, trying to identify who the complaints pertain to and their originators.

‘There are heaps of quotes in the report that give away who’s involved.

There remains a genuine concern that the individuals we voiced concerns about continue to hold their positions, leading us to worry that there may be reprisals or investigations targeting those who have spoken out.

‘The term ‘Punishment Island’ may not be universally known, yet it’s quite evident who employs such phrases – they serve as clear indicators.’

A worker at One Nine informed Intersection that this term refers to a situation where an employee is intentionally excluded or sidelined by their manager due to presumed work-related mistakes.

According to one employee, they were put on hold by their manager after expressing concerns about a certain matter.

‘The place is universally known as ‘Punishment Island’. As a child, just the thought of such a place would make me cry.’

‘I have now became disengaged. I am exhausted by the games.’

Another person referred to ‘Punishment Island’ as ‘a pattern of repeatedly singling out an employee for a prolonged duration, before eventually shifting the focus to another individual.’

If you aren’t on Punishment Island during that particular month, it’s equally troubling to see your friends and acquaintances there.

According to another report, numerous rumors circulated regarding the individuals potentially implicated in an occurrence where it was claimed a manager suggested allowing a couple to engage in an intimate act within his office during a company event.

The source shared with Daily Mail Australia that they were unsure about why someone might consider it appropriate to disclose such specific information to the public in this manner, instead preferring more discreet methods.

According to the statement, the person making the complaint described an event as follows: ‘It was a work gathering, famed for excessive alcohol consumption. During the night, [Individual] found himself in a group that included me, my then-boyfriend, and some other coworkers from the newsroom.’

Before the conversation turned serious, there were a few light-hearted comments about the relationship. However, things took a disturbing turn when [Individual] said to my partner, “Feel free to sleep with her in my office whenever you’d like… just let me know when it happens.” This statement is beyond reprehensible.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my gratitude for the repeated promises made by Nine. Time and again, I’ve seen him assure those with concerns that their well-being is of utmost importance. Furthermore, he’s shown unwavering commitment to stand behind every individual who stepped forward during the review process.

Despite the media conglomerate agreeing to enact 22 suggestions outlined in the report, many of these actions appear to be merely cosmetic changes, like revising the company’s code of ethics, instating a more selective hiring process, and promising additional audits.

Meanwhile, I find myself in a heart-wrenching predicament as an employee of this network, one that’s been my passion since day one. Despite sharing harrowing tales of the mistreatment we’ve endured, many of us are now compelled to carry on serving those very individuals we voiced our concerns against. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, but I remain hopeful that change will come, and our love for this network will see us through these challenging times.

60 Minutes features Dimity Clancey and Amelia Adams, along with Melbourne newsreader Tom Steinfort and Deborah Knight from A Current Affair on weekends, were among the most vocal critics during a country-wide staff gathering, expressing their discontent regarding the company’s weak reaction to the review.

As a lifestyle expert looking into workplace issues, I recently uncovered some startling statistics from a media company’s broadcast division. Over the last five years, a staggering 57% of their employees reported experiencing bullying, discrimination, or harassment. Shockingly, one-third of these individuals disclosed that they had been sexually harassed within this same timeframe. This underscores the urgent need for companies to prioritize creating safe and inclusive work environments.

It’s clear that the grievances date back to the mid-90s and include inappropriate conduct. However, many instances reported to the investigators involve senior executives who are still employed by the company.

The report indicated that the company’s detrimental work environment was fostered by factors such as insufficient leadership responsibility, power discrepancies, gender bias, and a paucity of diversity, along with widespread mistrust towards leaders across the organization.

Reports indicated that Clancey was furious over the company’s inactivity, as he felt that several employees had spent countless hours expressing their concerns during two-hour interviews with investigators, only to see those who were bullying others at Nine go unpunished.

Steinfort sought clarification on who would be held responsible following the revelations, while Knight too wanted to understand if those responsible would face consequences.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d like to share some insights about a recent situation I encountered. When an external agency carried out an assessment, it was made clear that no individual concerns raised in the review would prompt direct disciplinary action, unless followed by a separate internal probe. In simpler terms, any complaints needed further investigation before any actions could be taken against specific individuals.

In the television news and current affairs department of the network, there have been numerous reports of harsh treatment from both male and female managers. Employees have shared distressing instances of widespread bullying.

As a devoted admirer, let me share this: She’s more like a corrosive tormentor. There were times I’d shed tears in my vehicle upon reaching work, for the simple reason that I was about to encounter her. This is based on what a fellow network employee disclosed to the investigators.

She often makes you appear foolish by belittling your efforts. Her actions consistently weaken your confidence, showing little concern for others and their feelings. Moreover, she casually mentions that ‘a thousand people would die for this job,’ which suggests a lack of empathy towards people’s wellbeing.

Frequent allegations arose concerning inappropriate sexual behavior displayed by a majority of older male managers towards their junior female counterparts.

It was common knowledge among the staff that some of the offenders exhibited such predictable behavior, that fresh recruits were promptly advised about them upon joining the company.

In her 20s, a female staff member recounted that she had been previously cautioned about him. She also shared that his recurring remarks concerning her physique were a common occurrence.

He made me feel as though I was nothing more than an object to be admired, while he saw himself as the trustworthy one simply due to his advanced age. Over the course of time, this consistently undermined my self-assurance, gradually wearing it down bit by bit.

Another said: ‘[My supervisor] said to me “don’t let him touch your boobs”. He mainly targeted young women. Women were constantly in tears about their interactions with [Individual]. Younger women were scared to speak up.’

A person shared their experience: ‘While I was in [location], I remember [Individual] attempting to influence me inappropriately. At our Christmas party, he even touched me in an unwelcome manner on my backside. Additionally, at other occasions, he would surreptitiously rub my legs from under the table. In another instance at [location], I observed him behaving similarly towards other women.’

In the course of my initial day at the newsroom, I caught wind of some of the female colleagues discussing [Individual]. One of them mentioned, “Has [Individual] ever been employed by Nine News if they haven’t made an inappropriate advance towards you?

Some argued that nearly equally problematic was the corporation’s practice of concealing issues, where top-level managers were assigned to suppress any voices speaking against the prevalent bullying and mistreatment within the company.

On the day following the incident involving inappropriate behavior at work, a colleague approached me to discuss the matter, as they shared with me later on.

It seemed like she might have been checking on me to ensure I was alright and perhaps looking for an opportunity to act, but instead, her presence was more about keeping me silent, preventing any complaints from me.

‘She made it very clear that it would not be in my best interests to make an issue out of it.’

Nine’s staff often discussed the deeply ingrained toxic culture at the network as if it were a normal topic of conversation, such as discussing the weather. They would frequently speak about instances of bullying, harassment, and public humiliation.

One staff member expressed to the investigators that, upon reflection, it now seems frightening to them how commonplace it had appeared.

More recently, Michael Sneesby, who had been the head of Nine, initiated the review in June. However, he left the company a month ago for reasons not related to the review, which was made public five weeks later.

The motivation behind initiating the investigation stemmed from a series of accusations directed at Darren Wick, the previous head of news and current affairs.

In a clear and unreserved manner, Chairperson Catherine West apologized to the 5,000 employees of our company for having to experience the persistent bullying and harassment that is deeply ingrained in our system.

Today, Nine faces a particularly challenging day as we grapple with these discoveries and delve deeply into significant cultural matters within our organization, she stated.

At Nine, the actions detailed in the report are not tolerated. Misuse of authority, intimidation, sexual misconduct, and inappropriate behavior are all unacceptable. Such behaviors should not be part of our community.

We recognize that a significant number of our previous and current staff members have suffered due to a toxic work environment, frequent unacceptable conduct, and insufficient action on our part in addressing these issues historically.

To anyone who’s encountered behavior inconsistent with Nine’s values, we sincerely express our regret and deep apologies on behalf of our board.
