Exploring Val’s endgame in Thunderbolts* and the rest of the MCU
As a die-hard Marvel fan with years of comics and films under my belt, I can’t help but get pumped about the upcoming Thunderbolts movie! The concept of super-soldiers and assassins forced to work together is right up my alley. And hey, who wouldn’t love to see Bucky Barnes as a Congressman? That’s a twist I never saw coming!
Among Marvel’s highly anticipated future productions is the upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie set for release in 2025. Although specifics about the plot are limited, it has been confirmed that this film will showcase some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s top super-soldiers and assassins teaming up to confront either the Sentry or a more significant menace. Excitingly, Bucky Barnes is also part of the cast (hurray!). Intriguingly, he seems to have transitioned into a political role as a Congressman now (interesting twist!), and his classic long-haired look makes a comeback, too (double hurray!).
Beyond the realm of enhanced warriors and assassins, we welcome back Julia-Louis Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, affectionately known as “Val”. Originally presented in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, she has been gathering her own squad, much like Nick Fury did during the initial phase of the MCU. While Fury’s intentions were selfless and for the common good, Val appears to be primarily focused on her own interests and harbors hidden agendas.
Val puts the Thunderbolts together for her own gain
Ever since the debut of Disney Plus series, she’s been keeping herself occupied, gathering disgraced military personnel, assassins, and enhanced soldiers. At the same time, she’s been secretly influencing the righteous characters to eliminate their superiors. In the post-credits scene of Black Widow, she deceives Yelena Belova into pursuing Clint Barton, falsely accusing him of her murder. Driven by revenge, Yelena almost took his life in Hawkeye, but Clint eventually revealed the truth about Vormir to her.
In a similar manner, she enlisted John Walker, who had fallen from grace following his temporary tenure as Captain America, to serve under her as US Agent. Judging from the trailer for the upcoming Thunderbolts film, it appears that she has also enlisted Ghost from Ant-Man and Wasp, and Taskmaster from Black Widow into her growing team. Recent rumors even suggest that she has acquired Avengers Tower! These details certainly stir up intriguing questions about Everett Ross’s ex-spouse and the current Director of the CIA.
A widely speculated scenario is that character named Val might be secretly aligned with the well-liked villain, Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin. In the final episode of “Echo”, it’s hinted that Fisk will run for Mayor of New York. If the comic books serve as a guide, once he becomes Mayor, he enacts a law banning all vigilantes and establishes his own superhero task-force to supposedly safeguard the citizens. This might be mirrored in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Some recent rumors suggest that Marvel is planning for “Spider-Man 4” to be a joint adventure between Daredevil and Spider-Man, focusing on Mayor Fisk. There’s speculation that Val could be involved in this, manipulating situations from both sides with an ultimate objective in mind.
In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, she yearns for her nation to possess the world’s largest Vibranium reserve. Meanwhile, Captain America: Brave New World promises the introduction of Adamantium from Titan’s remains. By weaving these storylines together, we might witness a street-level superhero team-up movie before Doctor Doom makes his entrance, marking the buildup to the Multiverse Saga’s climax. Additionally, there are hints that the Sentry, with the power of a million solar explosions, is on track for significant future accomplishments. This character appears to be another government attempt at creating a super-soldier.
By piecing everything together, it’s clear what Val appears to have planned. She forms the Thunderbolts as her specialized team for covert missions, including assassinations. Simultaneously, with global conflict escalating over Adamantium, she strategically establishes a presence at Avengers/Fisk Tower, where Wilson Fisk serves as Mayor and collaborates with her in nefarious activities. By leveraging his extensive resources, she aims to acquire Adamantium, Vibranium, or even both, potentially for experiments involving a specific Canadian mutant. Throughout this, Sentry is intended to be her secret weapon, who will eventually break free from her control and become a genuine hero.
Although this is largely conjecture, it adds to the excitement. As we draw nearer to the upcoming events of Thunderbolts, further details will likely surface. Until then, take care alligator friends!
