Explaining the Ending of Netflix’s New Thriller The Madness
As a seasoned journalist who has covered numerous conspiracies and investigations throughout my career, I find the story of Muncie to be both chilling and thought-provoking. The idea that one’s life can be turned upside down by mere coincidences and being in the wrong place at the wrong time is a stark reminder of the power of misinformation and hysteria.
As a captivated viewer, I must express that Netflix’s latest miniseries, titled “The Madness,” is not a depiction of the January 6th, 2021 events per se. However, the ingenious mind behind the series, Stephen Belber, sheds light on how the chilling events at the Capitol that day served as a profound catalyst for the crafting of this intriguing conspiracy-laced thriller.
According to Belber, “The world was unsteady,” he notes. “It wasn’t always clear who was reliable. I found appealing the notion of introducing a character whose viewpoint would allow us to navigate through the chaos and explore various societies, cultures, and communities. We could observe where they crack under pressure and where there might be potential for unity in the future.
In the story The Madness, it’s revealed that the character in question is Muncie Daniels, portrayed by Colman Domingo and serving as an executive producer. Muncie, a thriving CNN news anchor, experiences a drastic change in his life while on a retreat to the Poconos for book writing purposes. During this time, he gets embroiled in a murder case when falsely accused of killing the leader of a hate group named The Forge, a white-supremacist organization. Subsequently, a widespread misinformation effort ensues, making Muncie one of the country’s most sought-after fugitives.
As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but express my excitement about this series. It’s more than just a thrilling ride; it’s Muncie’s relentless quest to prove his innocence and unearth the mastermind behind his murder accusation. But what’s truly intriguing is not only uncovering who framed him, but also understanding why he was set up in such a manner. The show is brimming with unexpected twists and turns that leave you reeling, building to a climactic finale that wraps up Muncie’s tale. However, the question remains: does Muncie find the answers he so desperately seeks?
In simpler terms, creators Belber and fellow showrunner VJ Boyd discuss the climax of “The Madness,” unraveling the series’ major mystery and an essential confrontation.
The climactic showdown
In the city of Muncie, there are several individuals who are heavily invested in its demise. In Episode 7, it is revealed that the main antagonist, Rodney Kraintz (portrayed by Neal Huff), is the major shareholder of a tech company named Revitalize. He has been orchestrating Muncie’s fall from grace secretly. The climax of the series, The Madness, revolves around an important confrontation: Muncie standing against Rodney, in his office located within a tranquil warehouse in New York City.
In the role of a determined moviegoer, I’d rephrase it as: Wielding a firearm, I (the intruder) forcefully enter Rodney’s office, finding him alone and defenseless. Within this room lies an immense server farm, a tool he employs in his crusade to disseminate misinformation at an unprecedented rate.
Rodney employs deception to further his ambitions in politics and power, but Muncie poses an obstacle. Despite being confronted by an armed Muncie, Rodney doesn’t appear overly concerned or intimidated—someone as skilled at large-scale manipulation as Rodney likely can’t be stopped by just one person. “If someone harms someone you care about, or if you feel betrayed by a distortion of the truth, or by the fall of a Neo-Nazi group, I encourage you to think more broadly,” Rodney attempts to explain, but Muncie interrupts him, growing tired of Rodney’s dismissive tone.
Muncie angrily inquires, “Why on earth did you falsely accuse me?” He retorts, “You were present.” However, as Belber clarifies, Rodney’s response is not entirely truthful; he’s being somewhat deceitful by suggesting the framing was merely a matter of chance. The circumstances that led to the framing were actually quite complex: Muncie’s reputation, his race, his presence at the scene, and manipulating these factors to create a racially charged distraction were all part of a clever diversion for what Rodney Kraintz was truly planning. Nevertheless, this was purely luck; Muncie wasn’t intentionally set up in advance.
The wrong place and the wrong time
As it turned out, Muncie seemed to be an ideal candidate for the framing. Boyd describes it as a ‘bad luck’ or ‘unfortunate coincidence’,
The surprising aspect of the ending in “The Madness” lies in the revelation that the central plot twist concerning Muncie’s issues was not a carefully orchestrated conspiracy but rather a series of coincidences and unfortunate timing. According to Boyd, these small occurrences can often lead people to believe in a premeditated conspiracy. He cites PizzaGate as an example, stating that if one is deeply invested in it, they might interpret every tweet from Hillary Clinton containing a pizza emoji as a secret code. However, as Boyd points out, it was merely her expressing a desire for pizza. Essentially, the conspiracy, as often occurs, revolved around power.
Muncie finds himself at a pivotal juncture: Should he eliminate Rodney or choose to depart. Throughout every challenging situation he’s encountered, Muncie has consistently chosen the noble path. Even in his most trying moment, confronting the man who set him up, he persists on taking the high road, opting not to harm Rodney.
In a conversation with me, Boyd expressed a sense of predictability about the situation, saying something like, “This feels like the usual way things wind up.” However, he admits that they may have driven Muncie to a point where, from an outside perspective, it might seem justifiable if Muncie were to take action against Rodney. This ambiguity is what makes the confrontation between Muncie and Rodney so gripping, as we’re torn between expecting Muncie to keep his cool and understanding why he might not be able to.
In a different scenario, we considered Muncie being the one who pulls the trigger, Boyd discloses. Initially, there was an early draft where the story concluded with Muncie abducting Rodney Kraintz and holding him captive in his basement, tying him up and compelling him to manipulate situations for good.
In the end, it was decided to remain faithful to Muncie’s ethical principles; Belber explains, “It seemed unjust to turn Muncie into that kind of character… when he rises above while others sink low.” He also hinted at the idea that Muncie would never truly be safe, even if Rodney Kraintz was removed, as there are still many who manipulate stories behind the scenes.
One last twist
As Muncie departs, The Madness delivers one final unexpected shock: Rodney meets a gruesome end at the hands of an unlikely suspect – Bobby Woods. Having managed to slip away from the FBI’s raid on The Forge, Woods is caught on camera murdering Rodney and his bodyguards mere moments after a broadcast declaring him completely innocent of any wrongdoings. Boyd comments, “As Agent Khalil warned Muncie earlier, ‘Stirring up madness can sometimes lead to it biting you back.’ Rodney was the one manipulating events and inciting people – he was his own downfall.” In a cruel twist, the very chaos that Rodney exploited for personal gain ultimately leads to his demise.
In the end, after Muncie managed to escape the chaos that once threatened to consume him, the closing scene depicts him enjoying time with his kids in a park. However, tranquility is not absolute. The abrupt sound of a car driving off sends a chill through him. “By the finale,” Boyd explains, “Muncie recognizes that he’s unsettled by the car, even terrified. Yet, he also admits to himself ‘Even if I had fired the gun, I wouldn’t have felt any more at ease. I would still have jumped when that car sped away.'” He then exchanges a heartfelt moment with his former spouse, Elena (Marsha Stephanie Blake), and they exchange smiles as the screen goes dark, instilling a feeling of optimism for Muncie and his family to heal. Yet, one cannot help but wonder if Muncie will ever truly feel secure again.
After clearing his name and moving past a dangerous conspiracy, Muncie might focus on rebuilding relationships within his family that have become strained. However, false rumors persist, and the specter of chaos remains unresolved.
