Explaining Prince George’s titles once his father, Prince William, becomes King
As a proud subject of the British Crown and a longtime admirer of the royal family, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe as we delve into the fascinating journey of Prince George, the future King of England. The recent events surrounding the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the granting of titles have added an exciting new chapter to his life story.
Prince George, born to William, Duke of Cambridge (also known as Prince of Wales), and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (or Princess of Wales), is their eldest child and son. He’s the one who will eventually become the British monarch independently, while he has a younger sister, Princess Charlotte, and a brother, Prince Louis, who often steals the limelight.
George was originally known as Prince George of Cambridge, named George Alexander Louis. At the moment of his birth, his parents held the titles of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, roles they also held for his subsequent siblings.
As a devoted admirer, I find myself reflecting on the latest developments and the illustrious titles that someday may be mine to hold – those very same titles that Prince George stands to inherit in the future.
The Death Of Her Majesty The Queen
As a devoted admirer, I found myself moved by the news of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s passing on September 8, 2022. Over the subsequent two days, our beloved Cambridge family underwent an impressive trio of name transitions. On the very day of her majesty’s demise, we were George, Charlotte, and Louis Cambridge at school. In the afternoon, we became the Cornwall and Cambridges. The following day, we were honored as our grandfather, King Charles III, bestowed upon our father the title of Prince of Wales, transforming us into the royal family we are today. A truly momentous occasion to remember and cherish.
When Prince William ascended to the title of Prince of Wales, his wife and kids naturally became associated with Wales as well.
The Granting Of The Prince Of Wales Title
Contrary to popular belief, the title “Prince of Wales” isn’t automatically bestowed upon the new monarch; instead, it’s conferred beforehand when the future king ascends to the position.
When King Charles ascended the throne following the late queen’s demise, Prince William was instantly titled as the Duke of Cornwall. Later, during a televised speech, his father bestowed upon him the title of Prince of Wales.
Since the year 1337, when Edward of Woodstock bore the title Duke of Cornwall, it has come to symbolize the heir apparent to the British throne. Although he was also known as the Prince of Wales, he did not ascend to the throne due to his passing in 1376.
What many people might not know is that the Duke of Cornwall usually manages the lands owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, which is worth billions.
At certain moments in history, instead of being referred to as “The Prince of Wales,” the individual who is next in line for the throne might be exclusively addressed as “The Duke of Cornwall.” A notable case is that of Henry, who held the title of Duke of Cornwall.
Henry, Duke of Cornwall, was the newborn son of King Henry VIII and Queen Catherine of Aragon. He lived for just 52 days, having been born on January 1st, 1511, and passing away on February 22nd, 1511. Before and after this brief life, King Henry VIII and Queen Catherine experienced the loss of other children. Their only child to survive was a daughter named Mary, who would later ascend the throne as Queen Mary I.
Will Prince George Become Duke Of Cornwall?
Indeed, when his father ascends the throne, Prince George will be entitled to the position of Duke of Cornwall without any formal ceremony. Additionally, he will receive various other titles such as the Duke of Rothesay and the Earl of Chester, along with several others.
The Prince of Wales title will be determined by William’s decision. He might choose to delay granting it until George grows older. You should know that when the late Queen ascended the throne following the death of her father, King George VI, in 1952, Charles III, who is now the king, became the Duke of Cornwall along with all other titles associated with being the heir to the throne, automatically.
Charles did not become Prince of Wales until 1958 when he was 10-years-old.
William could choose to follow the same path regarding George. Yet, this may alter if George reaches the age of 18 when his father ascends the throne. Regarding the financial affairs of the Duchy of Cornwall, it’s probable that a plan is in place for the future king to learn the necessary skills before assuming control.
Do All The Titles Associate With The British Throne?
Prince George is set to assume a broad range of titles beyond his title as the Duke of Cornwall, with additional titles such as these being passed down to him automatically.
- Earl of Chester – Given alongside the Prince of Wales title as the Earl of Chester is associated with Wales – the title will be acquired when the Prince of Wales title is given by William to his son.
- Duke of Rothesay – Scotland
- Earl of Carrick – Scotland
- Baron of Renfrew – Scotland
- Lord of the Isles – Scotland
- Prince and Great Steward of Scotland
When William ascends to the throne, neither of his sons will assume the Dukedom of Cambridge. Instead, it will return to the monarchy. The same applies to the Duke of Edinburgh title upon Charles’ ascension. He inherited the title following Prince Philip’s death.
