Kim Kardashian recently shared that she didn’t pass the California Bar Exam, sparking a renewed discussion about how difficult the test is and whether it’s a true measure of someone’s ability to become a lawyer.

According to California attorney Golnoush Goharzad, who has practiced law for 17 years, the California exam traditionally focused heavily on essay and performance tests, with two full days dedicated to those formats instead of the more common one day of multiple choice and one day of essays and performance tests.
She added that the state’s unique legal framework makes it even more complicated.
California’s laws are quite different from both federal laws and the laws of many other states, which creates a lot of complexity, she explained.
That complexity has earned it a notorious nickname among lawyers.
According to Colleen Joyce, CEO of Lawyer.com, the California Bar Exam is famously difficult – often compared to climbing Mount Everest. This isn’t just due to the sheer volume of information tested, but also because it demands a very high level of critical thinking.
People retaking the exam often have a low success rate – as low as 24% – which Goharzad believes is due to feeling burnt out from repeated testing and the amount of information they need to remember.
She mentioned that nearly every successful lawyer she knows has experienced failure on the exam at least once, and it’s likely true for most lawyers in California.

According to Goharzad, not passing the bar exam doesn’t reflect a person’s overall intelligence or potential as a lawyer. He explains that the exam primarily tests a very specific skill – the ability to memorize a large volume of legal information and write in a predictable style quickly, under intense pressure. It’s a limited test, not a comprehensive evaluation of legal ability.
She added that real-world lawyering depends on instincts and strategy, not rote memorization.
She pointed out that successful lawyers rely on both gut feelings and careful planning, qualities the bar exam doesn’t measure.
Goharzad also stressed that Kardashian’s openness about falling short ‘should inspire others.’
She emphasized that this individual is just like any other test-taker. Her willingness to discuss failing the bar exam demonstrates that it’s alright to not pass on the first try – the important thing is to keep trying.
Childress agreed, explaining that her openness about her experiences helps others feel less alone in their own challenges. She emphasized that facing setbacks is a normal part of becoming a lawyer, and that perseverance is just as important as intelligence.
Kim Kardashian, who founded SKIMS, also revealed she used AI tools such as ChatGPT when she was a student. Legal expert Zara Goharzad noted this highlights how common AI is becoming in education today.
Most lawyers today are now using artificial intelligence in their work. AI is changing the legal profession, and legal conferences are increasingly focused on training lawyers to use it effectively. While AI isn’t perfect, it’s no more unreliable than traditional methods like working with a bar exam tutor.
Ultimately, Goharzad said critics who mock Kardashian’s legal ambitions are ‘just being snobs.’
She questioned why people assume law students are inherently more dedicated than Kim Kardashian, pointing out that people enter the legal profession for many different reasons. She believes Kardashian’s motivation – wanting to help others and advocate for them – is actually more commendable than the goals of some law students.
According to Goharzad, Kim Kardashian is already making a bigger impact on justice reform than many practicing lawyers.
She’s achieved more advocacy and progress on issues like prison reform and the death penalty than many lawyers, according to one observer. They emphasized that effective advocacy isn’t about having a law license, but rather about having a strong commitment and genuine passion for justice – qualities Kim Kardashian West clearly possesses.
Over the weekend, Kardashian, who took the exam back in July, confirmed that she did not pass.
She jokingly explained that while she portrays a lawyer on her new Hulu show, ‘All’s Fair,’ she isn’t actually one herself.
After six years of law school, I’m completely committed to passing the bar exam. I’m not looking for any easy way out, and I definitely won’t give up – I’ll just keep studying and pushing forward with even more resolve.
Kim then sent gratitude to those who have ‘supported and encouraged me along the way so far.’
