Expect "good news soon" about The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in Middle-earth, I’ve journeyed through Mordor more times than I care to remember and have even dabbled in the lore of Numenor. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been an exciting addition to my fantasy adventure library, despite some initial reservations about straying from Tolkien’s original narrative.

The final episode of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” streams this Thursday on Amazon Prime Video. This series, which takes place thousands of years before the popular “Lord of the Rings” tale, has received mixed reviews since its debut in 2022; it’s visually stunning (considering the large sum Amazon invested in it), but some ardent “Lord of the Rings” fans have expressed concern over how much it deviates from J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings. I initially had reservations too, but I’ve grown to appreciate the show as a grand, action-packed interpretation of one of the most well-known fantasy realms. I’m enjoying “The Rings of Power” and hope it continues.

Although no official announcement has been made regarding a third season, there seems to be a positive outlook among the cast and crew. Director Charlotte Brändström hinted at good news coming soon when she spoke with Radio Times recently.

According to reports, Ismael Cruz Córdova, who plays the elf Arondir in the show, mentioned recently that they might be planning a third season. He added that he hasn’t received any scripts yet but is confident about another installment. Similarly, co-showrunner Patrick McKay hinted at The Hollywood Reporter, saying they are actively working on it and asked for patience, comparing their progress to cooking a meal.

Indications suggest that, even though the figures might not have been as impressive as Amazon may have hoped, they appear content with the viewership and seem determined to stick to their initial five-season plan for the show. Rumors about a potential third season are circulating, and I truly hope those whispers prove true, as it would be fulfilling to see this series play out completely, despite its flaws.

Delaying the renewal of shows like “The Rings of Power” only prolongs the existing long gaps between seasons. Given its grand scale and intricate preparation process, it seems we’ll have to endure another two years (minimum) before catching more episodes. It’s just part of the fan experience when you’re hooked on a historically costly, elaborate TV production.

Beware SPOILERS below!

The Rings of Power director and cinematographer want to reach the fall of Númenor

Cinematographer Alex Disenhof has ideas for what he’d like to capture if The Rings of Power were to return for additional filming. “Though it would be quite a challenge due to its underwater setting, capturing the Fall of Númenor, is something I’d love to be part of,” he expressed.

Brändström was in agreement with him. “The Fall of Númenor and the massive tsunami!” she concurred. “That would be thrilling! I find the show captivating because it’s so cinematic and there aren’t many shows that offer such a wide scope, which makes it incredibly exciting…That would be thrilling! I find the show captivating because it’s so cinematic and there aren’t many shows that offer such a wide scope, which makes it incredibly exciting.

In Tolkien’s lore, the island of Númenor eventually disappears under the sea, a detail that may come across as a spoiler, but considering the series revealed a foreshadowing of this event in the initial season, it seems they were setting up the narrative from the start.

Let’s hope that “The Rings of Power” endure for a while, reaching this stage in the story. However, if you can’t wait any longer, the Season 2 finale will be released this Thursday, October 3, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
