Exclusive: Time Bandits star Kal-El Tuck tells us all about Apple's time-traveling dramady

As a gamer with a soft spot for time-traveling adventures and a deep-rooted passion for history, I must say that AppleTV+’s adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s classic movie “Time Bandits” has been an absolute delight. The series, helmed by comedy legends like Taika Waititi, Iain Morris, and Jemaine Clement, is nothing short of a hilarious, bonkers journey through the annals of time.

The TV version of Terry Gilliam’s classic film “Time Bandits,” produced by AppleTV+ and masterminded by comedy greats like Taika Waititi, Iain Morris, and Jemaine Clement, has been remarkably successful in reimagining the story. This series offers a side-splitting, mind-boggling journey through time.

As a gamer, I find myself at the heart of an extraordinary adventure led by Kal-El Tuck, who brings the charismatic character Kevin Haddock to life. Being a history enthusiast, I couldn’t help but feel thrilled when a motley crew of time-travelers, captained by none other than Penelope (Lisa Kudrow), barged into my bedroom – yes, you guessed it, my room is no ordinary space, but a gateway to different epochs in history.

Recently, we had a chat with Kal-El Tuck for an exclusive interview regarding his journey on the show. Give it a read!

Kal-El Tuck portrays the character of Kevin Haddock, a passionate history enthusiast. Intriguingly, he discovers that his room serves as a gateway to different time periods. A group of miscreants accidentally materialize in his bedroom, leading Kevin to embark on an exhilarating temporal expedition by chasing them through the ages.

I find a strong affinity for this part since I share the same passion for delving into history. It’s thrilling to travel back to significant periods and locations.

How did you first hear about Time Bandits, and what was your initial reaction to the script?

As a captivated fan, I must say that the script took me by surprise – it felt unlike anything I’d ever encountered before. The sheer fun and laughter it brought were astounding; I found myself chuckling out loud while simply reading it! And then, witnessing this extraordinary cast breathe life into the story was nothing short of breathtaking. It truly was a delightful experience that left me eagerly anticipating more!

How familiar were you with the original movie before joining the TV adaptation?

Although I wasn’t overly acquainted with the initial version, my father was, and it’s truly captivating to be a part of this fresh TV series, which my dad enjoyed watching at the same age as me back then.

“In the movie ‘Time Bandits,’ they travel to various time eras. Which historical period, during the filming, did you find most interesting?”

Without a doubt, I found the 1920s Harlem, New York, epoch absolutely captivating for filmmaking. It was truly an extraordinary adventure. The actors were hilarious, our costumes were top-notch which required us to shoot on-site in the city. The sets were breathtakingly authentic. This costume here was my personal favorite.

Working with this bandit crew was an absolute blast! What were your experiences like, and do you have any amusing anecdotes from filming?

During breaks from filming, we’d often find ourselves in our designated tent. There, we’d engage in various activities, such as playing video games like concentration on my console or participating in sports. It was a delightful experience, as everyone enthusiastically took part, making it an enjoyable and warm atmosphere overall. The environment was incredibly inviting and positively vibrant.

As someone who’s watched countless hours of TV shows and movies, I must say that there’s one particular scene from a series that stands out to me as my absolute favorite. This moment in time has left a lasting impression on me because it resonated with my own life experiences and touched my heart in ways few other scenes have managed to do.

As a thrill-seeker, one of my most exhilarating moments was leaping from Madame Chung’s ship into the water. That day marked my first major stunt, and it was an absolute blast! I can’t help but feel grateful for the exceptional skills and camaraderie displayed by Zoe Bell and the entire stunt team.

As a devoted admirer, here’s my take on paraphrasing your question: “Being part of the ‘Time Bandits’ crew is nothing short of extraordinary. Can you share insights about working on a production spearheaded by the brilliant minds of Taika Waititi, Jemaine Clement, and Iain Morris?”

As a gamer, let me tell you, it was nothing short of mind-blowing! Everyone around was top-notch. I even got a chance to share a scene with the awesome Taika, and boy, does he love improv! It was a thrilling challenge keeping up with him, constantly altering the scene’s flow. What a privilege it was to act alongside such greats!

On the set daily, both Jermaine and Iain became well-known figures to me. They were incredibly supportive and provided substantial aid throughout.

If I were to find myself in the magical world of Time Bandits once more (fingers crossed!), the historical eras I’d love to explore next are:

Absolutely, I’m eager for another installment as well! It would be fascinating to join Kevin and his gang on an adventure exploring the construction of the pyramids in ancient Egypt.

Apart from the “Time Bandits” series, are there any other upcoming projects that I might catch you in? Can you tell me where else you’ll be appearing soon?

I’m sorry to say things are confidential for now, but Time Bandits isn’t the last you’ll see of me.
