Exclusive: Theo James reveals the “strange” challenge of his dual role in The Monkey
In the latest chilling horror flick titled “The Monkey“, you’ll find Theo James once again gracing our screens, this time playing two distinct characters!
In a creative twist, filmmaker Osgood Perkins, renowned as the “Longlegs” director, has reimagined Stephen King’s short story titled “Longlegs,” expanding the narrative to incorporate twin characters, Hal and Bill, who are tormented by the titular monkey.
In a chat with Digital Spy prior to the release of “The Monkey,” James mentioned that while he thoroughly enjoyed portraying both characters because they are “completely distinct personas,” there were indeed some difficulties associated with it.
Hal is quite introspective, with a somewhat damaged personality, yet he serves as the ethical core of the movie. Meanwhile, Bill appears to be a young child stuck in an adult’s body, which has left him utterly mad.
In our efforts, both Oz and I were involved, yet it was Bill who received the most intense nudging. Our goal was to create a sense of enjoyment for him, but also an undercurrent of danger and madness.
It’s peculiar to act against yourself because you’re not doing it in real-time. This means that you need to plan your actions and have some idea of what you’ll do, while still trying to maintain the authenticity of the scene. You must think carefully about how your actions will affect the outcome before you perform them.
When you’re alone, it’s often best to focus on the present and let things unfold naturally. However, when dealing with two entities, it requires some level of strategy or planning.
In regards to Perkins, when it came to transforming King’s short story, there was a specific aspect that assisted him in relating to the content and grasp its essence.
As a gamer, I found myself intrigued by the concept that this simian character isn’t programmed to perform actions. This monkey won’t interact with me or attack me using those drumsticks it’s holding.
It didn’t resemble M3GAN or Chucky; instead, it had a somewhat divine aura, reminiscent of a sacred totem or idol. Once I tuned into its surrounding energy, I grasped its identity more clearly, and the task became less challenging.
No matter what he did, the response to “The Monkey” has been overwhelmingly positive before its debut, with many likening it to the renowned horror franchise “Final Destination.
The Monkey is released in cinemas on February 21.
