In the 1950s, Maila Nurmi, an actress, developed the enigmatic character of Vampira, a dark, horrifying goddess tinged with camp and fear. This character proved to be one of Nurmi’s most successful creations, and she later hosted “The Vampira Show,” airing classic horror films.
Although the series ran for just a single season (comprising 50 episodes initially), it has become an enduring cult favorite that helped Vampira solidify her status in the horror genre’s history. Following “The Vampira Show”, Nurmi reprised her role as Vampira in various films, with notable appearances in “Plan 9 from Outer Space“, a storyline about extraterrestrials executing their wicked “Plan 9” while Vampira served as one of their henchwomen. An interesting tidbit: when Tim Burton produced his 1994 biopic on Ed Wood, he chose Lisa Maria to portray Maila Nurmi/Vampira.
