Exclusive: Rami Malek promises new spy thriller is “something we’ve never seen before”

As a fan, I can’t help but notice the surge of interest in gripping spy thrillers, with shows like “Slow Horses” and “Black Bag” leading the way. This Friday, I’m excited to add another one to my watchlist – “The Amateur”, hitting cinemas near me!

The film revolves around an exceptionally skilled CIA code-breaker whose life takes a tragic turn when his spouse dies in a terrorist incident. In response, he embarks on a personal mission to unmask the perpetrators and mete out justice.

Apart from starring as the main character, Rami Malek also served as the producer of the film “The Amateur“, making it his debut production role in a movie.

In an interview with Digital Spy prior to its premiere, Malek discussed how his latest character assisted him in ensuring that “The Amateur” distinguishes itself among numerous other films.

He enjoys immersing himself in a role, contributing his skills as an actor, and collaborating with directors, cast members, and crew. He also appreciates observing the project grow from its initial stages through to completion.

Instead of using the term ‘control,’ let me rephrase by saying: “I prefer to have a small measure of involvement in the narrative, ensuring its authenticity, relatability, and originality – qualities that make it stand out uniquely on the screen.

I was eager to collaborate as a producer, teaming up with Hutch Parker and Dan Wilson, and partnering with the talented director, James Hawes – he’s truly remarkable and it’s amazing to have discovered him through the series “Slow Horses“”.

Hawes took charge in directing every episode from the debut season of “Slow Horses“, a series that has since gained massive popularity on Apple TV+. In fact, they have already completed filming for a fifth season, and a sixth season has already been announced.

However, why do spy thrillers continue to be a classic genre? As observed by Malek’s colleague, Laurence Fishburne, it is the intrigue surrounding secrets and deception that captivates us.

He said, “You might present one image, but beneath the surface, there are different things happening, and that’s simply a part of being human.

As a gamer, I’m always intrigued by the art of keeping in-game secrets, exposing them at just the right moment, safeguarding our virtual communities, and defending against formidable foes – it’s a rollercoaster ride full of high-stakes drama!

In a turbulent world, perhaps we yearn for a sense of structure, as if someone has control over the underlying chaos. – Caitríona Balfe.

In simpler terms, it seems that, as humans, we tend to find comfort in the idea that there are individuals who stand up for justice and guide us through complex systems. This belief provides us with a sense of security.

The Amateur is released in cinemas on April 11.
