Exclusive: Maxim Baldry teases a "very physical" season of The Rings of Power for Isildur

As a fanatic Middle-earth explorer and seasoned fantasy adventure seeker, I am beyond thrilled to delve back into the enchanting world of J.R.R Tolkien with the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” One character that has truly piqued my interest is young Isildur (Maxim Baldry), the Númenórean prince who finds himself stranded in Middle-earth.

The second installment of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is fast approaching, bringing us back in touch with a host of characters we first met in 2022. One such character is Isildur (Maxim Baldry), a young man hailing from the grand island nation of Númenor, who now finds himself stranded in Middle-earth. Known for its divine blessing of extended life by the Valar, Númenor is quite an opulent kingdom. Given his new circumstances in the less lavish landscape of Middle-earth, we wonder how Isildur will adapt and survive.

From the trailers, it seems that his character will encounter giant spiders during the new season, which is similar to experiences of various characters from The Lord of the Rings, including Bilbo and Frodo. At the San Diego Comic-Con, Baldry revealed that he was shooting a scene in studio with a rugby ball, while two individuals in morph suits held sticks for the spider’s legs. He described this day as being very claustrophobic, dark, wet, and muddy, and mentioned that “muddy” was particularly relevant. The experience was unusual because it was so confined, and he noted that somehow they managed to get his horse Beric onto the set, which he found puzzling. So, the day was quite claustrophobic, and it must have been challenging for the horse as well.

At approximately 2 hours, 48 minutes into the trailer that follows, you’ll spot Isildur engaged in combat with spiders. Here’s hoping Beric the horse is safe and sound.

Regarding the times when it turns out that big spiders are just people waving sticks instead, Baldry openly admits that the absurdity of such situations often leaves him in fits of laughter during filming. “I’m a bit of a joker,” he confessed. “I tend to laugh quite a lot on set, and I’m afraid the directors become somewhat annoyed because they think something like, ‘time is precious here on this set.'”

It appears that Isildur will have numerous adventures similar to battling spiders, as he shared that he performed many stunts himself, learned horse riding, and spent a lot of time riding this season. He further mentioned that for the first time, he needed to use a stunt gym, got tangled in some wires, and had to learn how to handle such situations without injuring himself severely. He enjoyed being physically active outdoors and found it reminiscent of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, as he was always outside.

It was a very physical season for him for Isildur. He was just constantly thrown around in the mud. I felt like I embodied Isildur a bit, and I was thrashed around and thrown around, and I think that just reflected his sort of desperate state. It’s a story of survival for him. He’s abandoned in Middle-earth and he has to find a way to get home and in the process finds people that he has to learn whether to trust or not. Maybe he falls in love, I don’t know. He has to make that decision and and come to that realization. So I found it to be a big progression in his character and my understanding of him as well.

Isildur might fall “in love” in The Rings of Power season 2

Concerning the aspect about falling in love, it’s clear that in season 2, we encounter a woman named Estrid (Nia Towle), as we’ve glimpsed her in trailers and similar images like the one depicted above. Furthermore, since author J.R.R. Tolkien has disclosed it in his books, we are aware that Isildur has offspring. Although I can’t predict the specifics, I don’t find it challenging to make an educated guess on this matter.

On this coming Thursday, August 29th, we’ll personally witness what’s ahead as “The Rings of Power” season 2 debuts on Amazon Prime Video. The initial three episodes of season 2 will be released simultaneously, followed by the release of one new episode each week thereafter for the next five weeks.
