Exceptional X-Men and the best 5 X-titles of September 2024

As a lifelong X-Men fan who grew up with the original lineup and have witnessed their evolution through the years, I can confidently say that the current crop of X-titles is nothing short of phenomenal. The ongoing series since the Fall of X has been nothing but exceptional, proving once again why the X-Men are Marvel’s mightiest mutants.

As a diehard X-Men fan, I’ve always been drawn to their ongoing series in Marvel Comics – it’s simply unbeatable! After the tumultuous events of the “Fall of X”, many of us fans were left wondering if our favorite mutants would maintain their legendary status. However, so far, the storylines have been as captivating as during the Krakoan era. Although things are different now, the essence of the X-Men still shines through, reminding us why we fell in love with them in the first place.

These five X-titles prove this and they also happen to be the best of them in September of 2024.

Exceptional X-Men No. 1 (best of the month)

  • Writer: Eve Ewing
  • Artist: Carmen Carnero

Instead of leading a typical life, Kitty Pryde prefers a more ordinary routine. She holds down a job at a tavern, tries dating, and enjoys playing with her roommate’s pet dog. Unsurprisingly, when she encounters a young mutant in peril, she springs back into action, which brings the first genuine smile to her face since the last Hellfire Gala.

I had concerns that abandoning the X-Men might halt Kitty’s development, but I underestimated Eve Ewing’s brilliant writing ability in portraying Kitty’s character strengths.

Uncanny X-Men No. 2 and 3 (most emotional)

  • Writer: Gail Simone
  • Artist: David Marquez

In the third installment of the comic book, Rogue, Gambit, Wolverine, and Jubilee encounter a fresh batch of mutants called the Outliers – specifically, Jitter, Ransom, Deathdream, and Caico. Unlike most other mutants who have their own tragic pasts, these four individuals carry a unique burden that sets them apart.

Among all individuals, none seem more fitting to aid these mutants than Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee, Nightcrawler, and Wolverine. Each of them has experienced rejection, mistreatment, and feelings of powerlessness at the hands of those they trusted.

As a passionate fan, I’m three issues deep into the latest Uncanny X-Men series, and Gail Simone and David Marquez are crafting some of the most emotionally resonant X-Men stories yet. Given all that transpired during the Fall of X, this is truly saying something! But here we are, enjoying stunning artwork and being moved to tears by heart-wrenching moments.

NYX No. 3 (most depth)

  • Writers: Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing
  • Artist: Francesco Mortarino

NYX goes beyond merely depicting a team of mutants within the comic book realm; writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing delve deeper into the complexities of the mutant world, revealing aspects that lie beneath the vibrant spandex and thrilling escapades. The narrative offers an insightful portrayal of what it truly means to be a mutant, painting a grim picture of their existence in this world.

Various individuals harbor prejudice towards mutants due to their unique nature, which often results in aggressive acts, even leading to lethal consequences. What makes Kamala Khan’s decision to stand for mutantkind significant is that she has only recently discovered her own mutant status. This act underscores the immense compassion of Ms. Marvel, who is renowned for having one of the largest hearts in comic book characters.

Wolverine No. 1 (best there is at what he does)

  • Writer: Saladin Ahmed
  • Artist: Martín Cóccolo

Wolverine attempted to abandon human society and coexist with wildlife, but found himself repeatedly drawn back into the fray. A common saying fits: “Once I step out, they always manage to drag me back.” However, Cyber soon regretted pursuing Logan, as he learned the hard way that it was best to let him be. In a fierce confrontation, Wolverine left his old drill sergeant with no choice but to retreat.

As the discussion progresses, a baffling ancient being unveils itself. This being takes issue with adamantium and desires its removal. It has previously altered the metal within Cyber’s physique, and now it seems that Wolverine himself might be at risk.

Phoenix No. 3 (biggest bad-@$$)

  • Writer: Stephanie Phillips
  • Artist: Alessandro Miracolo

Who currently surpasses Jean Grey when she’s empowered by the Phoenix Force? At present, no one has. In fact, Jean effortlessly defeated the Black Order and even suggested Thanos as their next target. That level of confidence deserves universal admiration. Facing Thanos in battle is a challenge that few dare to take up. Phillips’ Phoenix comic series consistently demonstrates that there’s no limit to what Jean can accomplish.
