Exactly how many pages of Fire & Blood are covered by House of the Dragon season 2?

As a die-hard fan who has lived and breathed the world of Westeros for years now, I must say that the pace at which “House of the Dragon” is adapting George R.R. Martin’s epic book, “Fire & Blood,” leaves me both exhilarated and somewhat bewildered. The first season was a masterful setup, covering approximately 78 pages in just ten episodes, and it felt like a marathon sprint through the history of the Targaryen dynasty.

The second installment of HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” the prequel series to “Game of Thrones,” came to an end in early August, initiating another prolonged period before season 3. The show is grounded on George R.R. Martin’s unconventional book, “Fire & Blood.” Unlike a typical novel, “Fire & Blood” functions as a fictitious historical text, penned by an historian named Archmaester Gyldayn who chronicles the rise and fall of the Targaryen dynasty from a retrospective perspective. Time elapses swiftly within the pages, and readers aren’t privy to any character’s thoughts directly. This historical account presents a complex challenge for its adaptation.

The inaugural season of “House of the Dragon” delivers an impressive performance, condensing approximately two decades of the characters’ lives, including their growing up, marriages, parenthood, and conflicts. The storyline initiates at the Harrenhal Great Council where it’s determined that Viserys, King Jaehaerys’ grandson, would ascend the Iron Throne after his grandfather. This event is portrayed around page 344 in my copy of “Fire & Blood.” Subsequent episodes encompass a host of events, culminating in the death of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s son Lucerys Velaryon at the hands of her half-brother Aemond. This tragic event transpires on page 422 of “Fire & Blood.” In summary, the first season of “House of the Dragon” roughly adapts around 78 pages of the book, with some events in the book occurring later in the series.

The first season was mainly dedicated to setting up the Dance of the Dragons, a brutal Targaryen civil war that tears apart the Seven Kingdoms. The second season kicks off the war itself. How many pages does it adapt?

In simpler terms, the initial occurrence in “House of the Dragon” season 2, as per the book, is Daemon Targaryen’s entry into Harrenhal Castle (found on page 412). Subsequent events like Queen Helaena’s son Jaehaerys’ murder, the Battle of Rook’s Rest, and dragonseed training are depicted. However, the show ends before the significant battle known as the Battle of the Gullet, which is roughly around page 446.

In contrast to Season 1 of House of the Dragon, which covered around twice as many pages from Fire & Blood, Season 2 is only adapting about half that number. So, what can we expect for Season 3? According to George R.R. Martin himself, Season 3 may not follow the book very closely. We’ll have to wait and see when it airs in 2026.
