Ewan Mitchell remains tight-lipped on Aemond and Alys’ relationship in House of the Dragon
As a devoted fan who’s been through the fire and blood of Westeros for far too many years, I must say that the conclusion of House of the Dragon’s second season has left me with a mix of anticipation and trepidation. While some may criticize the pace of this season, those of us who’ve delved into George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood know that bigger battles and intricate dynamics await us in the future.
For now, our journey in Westeros takes a pause, as House of the Dragon wrapped up its sophomore season on August 4th. Despite some criticism about its pacing (and I was among them), those who have read Fire & Blood remain hopeful that upcoming seasons will be nothing short of spectacular. The source material is packed with significant moments ahead, though the writers may decide to alter this course – but we can expect more than just epic battles. Indeed, there are additional conflicts and intriguing relationships to unfold, as well as new alliances and betrayals on the horizon.
WARNING: Minor spoilers for Fire & Blood are below.
It’s understandable that enthusiasts of the book series have been curious about key future developments for the characters and wanted to inquire about them from the cast; after all, it’s only natural! In an interview with Ewan Mitchell (Aemond Targaryen), Decider attempted to gather some insight regarding a developing relationship between Aemond and Alys Rivers. While we won’t delve into major spoilers here, suffice it to say that this is something from the book that has been eagerly anticipated by many readers.
Aemond is still looking for a mother figure in House of the Dragon
Although Mitchell made an effort to steer clear of revealing explicit story details, he managed to shed light on Aemond’s emotional state regarding his relationships with others.
Initially, the Decider did not explicitly call out Alys, instead alluding to a bond Aemond establishes within Harrenhal. In response to this, Mitchell provided an explanation as to why his character might display vulnerability despite being cautious about revealing his feelings.
He always kind of looked for surrogates for his mother. He found it in Vhagar, so to speak. An old she-dragon parallel. And he found it in the madame. But is that enough? So he’s always looking for his match, so to speak. Whether or not he finds it is another thing. Maybe there’s no one good enough for Aemond. Maybe he’s not good enough for anyone either.
In the interview, Decider brought up Aemond and Alys’ relationship, but Mitchell remained silent on the topic, simply replying “No comment.” When asked if he had interacted with the actress who plays Alys, Gayle Rivers, Mitchell appeared reluctant to discuss it. He praised her performance and hinted that they might have met during a table read, but didn’t share much else, as one would expect under such circumstances.
Fans who admire the character Aemond are undoubtedly thrilled at the prospect of a fresh perspective on him, whether they’ve read the book or not, and it appears that Mitchell shares this anticipation too. I must confess I’m both excited and apprehensive to witness the portrayal of his connection with Alys in the series. In the novel, I found Alys intriguing, but due to the lengthy Harrenhal scenes in the show, I couldn’t wait for her appearance on screen, which wasn’t ideal. Here’s hoping that this improves in the third season.
“The series ‘House of the Dragon’ is expected to come back for a third season around 2026, but only four seasons have been planned in total according to showrunner Ryan Condal. If you haven’t seen it yet or want to revisit, you can stream the first two seasons on Max.”
