Evil Dead II writer Scott Spiegel dead at 67: Sam Raimi collaborator passes away as friends share tributes

Screenwriter and director Scott Spiegel has died at age 67.

Announced by his friends on social media, it was shared that he left a significant impact on the horror movie genre, as he was well-known for it.

On Sunday, actor-director Bruce Campbell utilized a social media platform (presumably Facebook) to repost a message that had earlier been shared by filmmaker Robert Kurtzman.

‘Farewell to our buddy and shared monster enthusiast, Scotty Spiegel – one of the most hilarious individuals I’ve encountered.’

He added, ‘We all met on the set of Evil Dead 2, which he wrote, and became instant friends.’

Campbell built upon the post and shared that Scott Spiegel hailed from Michigan, adding, ‘This is a significant personal setback. Scott Spiegel greatly influenced my early years in Michigan.’

The heartfelt message went on, ‘From our days at Sunday School, working together as stock boys, all the way to co-writing the film ‘Evil Dead II’, I can’t glance back without noticing this one-of-a-kind friend always delivering hilarious low-budget jokes.’

‘I’m grateful for the treasure trove of happy memories. Keep Shemping, Scott!’

In another part of his message, Kurtzman mentioned that his deceased friend was the one who gave our then-new special effects company, KNB fx, its initial recognition in the film ‘INTRUDER’.

‘Over the years we worked together on From Dusk Till Dawn 2, Hostel 3, and others.’

He reminisced, “One of my favorite guilty pleasures, the Clint Eastwood movie ‘The Rookie’, was penned by Scotty.

Reflecting on so much joy, I can’t help but reminisce about those golden days, particularly the delightful evenings spent constructing model kits and attending movie nights at Greg Nicotero’s hillside abode. Those were magical moments shared with our vibrant filmmaking crew.

He concluded: ‘Will miss your smile and the laughs. See you on the other side, brother.’

Farewell to Scott Spiegel, a vital contributor to the creation of The Evil Dead films. In memory of you, I will remember the POV shots with gratitude.
