Evil Dead And Happy Death Day Stars Are Teaming For A New Horror Movie With Even More Genre Talent Behind The Scenes

Even as horror movies change, a few things always seem to work: strong female leads and a cast full of familiar faces from the genre. The upcoming film River is leaning into both of those strengths, bringing together stars from popular horror movies like Evil Dead, Happy Death Day, and Prey. That’s exciting news for fans!

The upcoming slasher film, River, is bringing together some familiar faces from the horror world. Jane Levy, known for her roles in Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe, will star alongside Jessica Roth, who worked on the Happy Death Day movies. Adding to the cast is Dane DiLiegro, famous for playing the Predator in Prey, as well as appearing in horror projects like V/H/S/Beyond, American Horror Stories, and Werewolves. Interestingly, some fans also loved his work on Season 5 of Only Murders in the Building! River will be released in theaters as a Shudder Original.

Joining the main cast, as reported by Variety, is Max Mattern. He recently played Billy Carroll, a victim in the Peacock true crime series Devil In Disguise: John Wayne Gacy.

What Will River Be About?

The movie River follows three siblings who haven’t spoken in years. After their father dies, they reunite to scatter his ashes along his favorite river. Their journey quickly becomes a struggle for survival when their boat malfunctions, leaving them stranded with no way to call for help. They soon discover they’re being hunted by something terrifying in the woods, and must overcome their personal conflicts if they want to survive.

Honestly, the premise hints at something bigger than just a typical monster – they’re calling it ‘almost mythic,’ which is intriguing. It could be nothing, though! Either way, I’m really excited to see Blake Lively and Jason Rothe thrown into a survival situation. The idea of them both working together and against each other sounds fantastic – I can’t wait!

The Other Horror Talents Behind The Scenes

River is the debut feature film from writer and director Josh Guiliano, who previously made award-winning horror shorts. It took six years to create, and while he’s new to feature films, he collaborated with experienced producers in the horror genre to bring it to life.

I’m a huge fan of Nick Antosca, and I’ll always recommend his work. He created the horror series Channel Zero and has written for or produced many other excellent shows, including Chucky, Hannibal, and Brand New Cherry Flavor. He’s also worked on true crime series like The Act and the recent Murdaugh: Death in the Family. He’s currently working on a Cape Fear series featuring Max Mattern. Antosca and Alex Hedlund’s production company, Eat The Cat, produced this movie, along with another company known for horror projects.

Steven Schneider of Spooky Pictures, known for launching the successful Paranormal Activity and Insidious franchises, also collaborated with M. Night Shyamalan on films like The Visit and Knock at the Cabin. Recently, he’s been involved in critically praised movies including Watcher, Late Night with the Devil, and this year’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk.

Jane Levy will star alongside Josh Brolin in the upcoming thriller Whalefall, a survival story partially set inside a whale. Meanwhile, Jessica Rothe is joining the cast of Titan, a horror film set in the Amazon rainforest, scheduled for release in 2026. Titan is directed by Mike P. Nelson, who is also directing a remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night coming out in 2025. Here’s to the continued success of talented actresses in horror!

We’re eager to hear more about the show River, especially when it will be released. We hope the announcement isn’t as unsettling as the show’s supernatural elements!
