Everything You Need to Remember From Marvel Before Watching Agatha All Along

As a seasoned movie critic who’s had the misfortune of watching more than my fair share of superhero shows, I must say that the upcoming Disney+ series, Agatha All Along, seems to be shaping up quite nicely. Having delved into the depths of WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, I can confidently say that this spinoff promises a thrilling ride for fans of dark witchcraft and comic book lore.

More than three years have passed since “WandaVision” premiered as the initial Marvel Cinematic Universe series on Disney+. Even though the popular “Agatha All Along” tune might still be fresh in your memory due to its pandemic popularity, you might not recall the exact particulars about Agatha’s character, her powers, and how witchcraft was portrayed in that show.

In the mysterious spin-off series, Agatha All Along, created by Jac Schaeffer who brought us WandaVision, focuses on Agatha, a malevolent witch with powers over dark magic, who once tried to seize the abilities of Avenger Wanda Maximoff using a book known as the Darkhold. The final episode of WandaVision saw Wanda casting a spell that imprisoned Agatha within an illusion.

Between those years, Wanda evolved into a more villainous character and embarked on her own fated journeys to be reunited with her family in the movie “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”. It’s likely that Agatha has been busy for many years in the town Westview, since it was there where Wanda last resided.

In the upcoming Disney+ series set for release on Sept. 18, the character Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) manages to escape from a spell cast by Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen). She then assembles her own group of witches and embarks on a mission to regain her powers. Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, and even Patti LuPone are among the witch characters who ally themselves with Agatha in their journey along what is called “The Witch’s Path.

Wanda Maximoff traps Agatha in a spell

In the series WandaVision, superhero Wanda Maximoff ventures to Westview, New Jersey, a town where her deceased lover, Vision, had intended to construct their home and establish a peaceful life together. Overwhelmed by immense sorrow, Wanda employs magic to enchant the entire town, controlling the thoughts of each resident. This enables her to revive Vision, and together they create (fictional) twin boys. The quartet enjoy an idyllic suburban existence within a reality that mimics classic sitcoms, with each episode referencing famous family sitcoms from different eras.

Near the finale of the performance, Wanda comes to realize that her meddlesome neighbor Agatha is actually a sorceress who had secretly entered into Wanda’s fictional world with an intention to seize Wanda’s magical abilities. Agatha then admits that Wanda was none other than the Scarlet Witch, a legendary witch from lore mentioned in the Darkhold – an ancient book of enchantments.

Agatha, capable of seizing other witches’ abilities upon being struck, attempts to capture Wanda’s sons as hostages. However, Wanda overpowers Agatha and exacts retribution by confining the malevolent witch within her own consciousness.

When Vision implores Wanda to release the residents of Westview, she agrees, tragically eliminating her (apparent) spouse and offspring in the act. Leaving the town behind, she carries the Darkhold with her for further study in the arcane arts.

In the opening scenes of “Agatha All Along“, Agatha remains residing within Westview, enacting different TV storylines – this is where she can be found.

The Darkhold is a book of dark magic

In the series “WandaVision”, Agatha holds an exceptionally potent grimoire filled with dark enchantments, which is known as The Darkhold. Eventually, Wanda seizes this book from her possession. Later on, in the movie “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, the Darkhold serves as a pivotal plot device, or what’s often referred to as the MacGuffin.

In the movie titled “Multiverse of Madness“, Wanda, yearning for reunion with her boys, endeavors to seize a superhero named America Chavez. She aspires to harness America’s ability to traverse universes in order to materialize her sons from an alternate reality.

America Chavez is being looked after by Doctor Strange. When the sorcerer refuses to hand over the young girl, Wanda employs the Darkhold to move between realities and confront Doctor Strange and America across various dimensions.

However, throughout the film, a sorceress gives up her life in order to annihilate the Darkhold and halt Wanda’s ability to traverse dreams. Subsequently, Wanda journeys to a mountaintop that possesses the Darkhold’s power to reclaim her powers.

In their attempt to thwart Wanda’s plans, Doctor Strange obtains the Book of Vishanti, which counteracts the Darkhold, but unfortunately, Wanda destroys it. As a last resort, Doctor Strange secures a Darkhold from another dimension, using it to enter dream-state combat with Wanda.

Wanda dies in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Over time, Wanda comes to understand her mistakes when her counterparts from another world shrink back in terror at her rather than welcoming her. As she recognizes that she’s become a beast, Wanda triggers an avalanche that crushes both herself and eradicates every Darkhold scattered across all dimensions. The fallout from Wanda’s demise undeniably affects the spell she placed on Agatha, marking the starting point of the series.

The Salem Seven are supervillains from the Marvel comics

In the teaser for Agatha All Along, seven figures wearing hoods play significant roles, leading fans to ponder if they might represent the Salem Seven. These enigmatic characters could potentially serve as the primary adversaries in the show; however, it’s uncertain how closely the series will adhere to the original storyline.

In the comic books, Agatha is depicted as having a son named Nicholas Scratch who carries a sinister aura. He, in fact, has seven offspring collectively known as the Salem Seven. These seven children often find themselves at odds not only with their own mother but also with the Fantastic Four, engaging them in numerous battles.

In the series Agatha All Along, there could be a distinct backstory for the Salem Seven, contrasting with their portrayal in WandaVision. In that show, we witnessed Agatha’s trial by other witches in a place called Salem for practicing dark witchcraft. However, instead of being punished, Agatha killed all the witches involved, including her own mother. Since the trial happened in Salem, it seems likely that the Salem Seven in the show could have some connection to these witches Agatha betrayed and murdered.
