Everything you need to know about The Diplomat season 3 on Netflix
As a seasoned gamer of international politics, having binge-watched my fair share of diplomatic dramas, I must say I’m eagerly anticipating the third season of “The Diplomat.” The cliffhanger at the end of season two left me on the edge of my seat, and I can hardly wait to see how things unfold between Kate Wyler and Vice President Grace Penn.
Prior to the airing of the second season of The Diplomat, Netflix had already extended Kate Wyler’s stay abroad and confirmed a renewal for season three in advance.
As a dedicated gamer, I can relate to Kate these days. It feels like my quest is far from over, with each level more challenging than the last, especially after reaching the climax of season two.
So, how does this affect Season 3 developments? Given that both Kate and Vice President Grace Penn have revealed their hand, how will their relationship unfold moving forward?
Get ready for all the details on The Diplomat’s third season, but beware, there are major spoilers from season two ahead! (for the audience)
When does The Diplomat season 3 come out?
As the countdown to the second season’s premiere neared its end, work on the third season was already underway. Filming occurred in both London and New York City, which suggests that we could potentially see new episodes sooner rather than later.
Previously, there was approximately an 18-month hiatus between seasons one and two. However, it’s possible that this wait could be reduced for season three. Nevertheless, we anticipate that season three of The Diplomat might premiere as early as late 2025 or possibly even in early 2026.
The uncertainty lies in deciding if season three will consist of eight episodes or fewer, like season two. However, it’s possible that season three might extend beyond this length.
In a conversation with TVLine, series creator Debora Cahn disclosed that it was ultimately her decision, not Netflix, to trim the length of the second season.
Netflix found themselves under pressure. They aimed for eight episodes instead, but it seemed the time allotted was insufficient to produce that many. The workload felt overwhelming given the apparent brevity of the deadline.
Unbeknownst to Cahn, there was a 18-month hiatus between seasons. If she had been informed about this, she could have arranged for season two to run longer as initially intended. Given these circumstances, it seems likely that season three will follow suit.
Who will be in The Diplomat season 3 cast?
It’s challenging to conceive of “The Diplomat” without its central character, the diplomat, making Keri Russell reprising her role as Kate Wyler feels like an inevitable choice.
It’s equally challenging to conceive of season three starting without Rufus Sewell portraying Kate’s husband, Hal Wyler, given the way season two concluded. However, we wonder who else might be part of their cast this time around.
The following cast members are currently expected to return for The Diplomat season three:
Rory Kinnear portraying Nicol Trowbridge, the Prime Minister
Allison Janney entered season two somewhat later and first appeared as Vice President Grace Penn in the fifth episode. However, the central conflict of season three is expected to be between her and Kate, so we can anticipate seeing more of Allison Janney in this upcoming season.
What will happen in The Diplomat season 3?
When Tudum was initially informed about the renewal, creator Debora Cahn hinted that “in season three, the chessboard gets turned upside down”. In this season, Kate experiences the specific horror of achieving one’s desires.
The terrifying event from last season may indeed become a reality as Grace Penn assumes the position of Vice President, following the unexpected demise of the President.
Since their last encounter didn’t seem to go well, it’s unlikely that Penn will be pleased about this development. After all, Grace and Kate weren’t seeing eye to eye, and Penn is determined not to let the main character step into her role as Vice President without a fight.
Is there a trailer for The Diplomat season 3?
As a dedicated fan, I’m eagerly anticipating that by late 2025 or, if the bureaucratic dance takes a bit longer, early 2026, I’ll finally get to feast my eyes on season three of The Diplomat.
The Diplomat seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Netflix.
