Everything You Need to Know About the 2025 Met Gala
The much-anticipated night in fashion circles is nearly upon us: the Met Gala, a spectacle where everyone watches celebrities make their grand entrances at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, dressed like living masterpieces themselves.
Over time, I’ve witnessed my community grow and diversify, and while our annual event, the Met Gala, is primarily a fundraiser for the museum’s Costume Institute, it has earned its own legendary status. Nowadays, there’s an air of excitement each year as we eagerly anticipate who will be graced with an invite to the Met Gala and what extraordinary outfits they will don.
2025 will bring us the upcoming edition of the yearly event showcasing celebrities, fashion, and art – a grand spectacle to look forward to!
When is the 2025 Met Gala? How can I watch?
I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be part of the buzz surrounding the 2025 Met Gala! Mark your calendars for Monday, May 5, as it takes place at the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. If you can’t make it in person, don’t worry – you can still be a part of the excitement by tuning into the live stream on Vogue’s social media platforms and website!
This year’s Met Gala-related exhibit is set to run from May 10th through October 26th, 2025.
What is the theme and who decides it?
2021’s Met Gala theme, chosen mainly by Andrew Bolton, head curator at The Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is “Superb Tailoring: Black Style’s Elegance.” Drawing inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Crafting of Black Diasporic Identity,” the exhibition will explore the development of tailoring and style in relation to the creation of Black identities. Notably, this marks the first time since the “Men in Skirts” theme back in 2003 that the Met Gala will concentrate on men’s fashion.
1) Professor Miller of Barnard College’s Africana Studies department not only taught but also assisted in curating a special exhibit. Given that Miller’s acclaimed book spans 300 years of Afrodiasporic history, there’s a wealth of fashion inspiration for the Met Gala.
Dandyism might appear lighthearted, but it frequently presents a test or surpassing of social and cultural stratifications,” Miller noted in the Met’s press release about the theme. “It raises queries concerning identity, portrayal, and mobility in terms of race, class, gender, sexuality, and power. The exhibition delves into this idea as both a statement and a provocation.
What does that mean for the dress code?
This year’s Met Gala dress code is titled “Tailored Just for You,” subtly referencing men’s fashion and custom tailoring as a source of inspiration for the night’s attire. The flexible nature of “for you” within the code encourages individual style, personal preference, and creative freedom in interpreting and expressing oneself.
Who are the co-chairs hosting this year’s gala?
Since 1995, with only two exceptions, Anna Wintour – Vogue editor-in-chief and Costume Institute trustee – will once again take on her role as co-chair for the Met Gala. Over the past three decades, it’s largely thanks to Wintour that this annual museum event has grown into a dazzling spectacle of A-list celebrities.
Wintour will be accompanied by fellow chairs: actor Colman Domingo, race car driver Lewis Hamilton, rap artist A$AP Rocky, and musician-composer Pharrell Williams. Notably, Pharrell Williams is presently the creative director for Louis Vuitton’s men’s line.
Despite the NBA playoffs, LeBron James will take on an honorary role at the Met Gala. However, if his Los Angeles Lakers reach the Western Conference semifinals (which coincides with the gala), there’s a possibility that he might not be able to attend the event due to schedule conflicts.
At the gala this year, they are resurrecting their “Host Committee” custom, which features a group of artists lending their support to the event. This year’s committee consists of André 3000, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Jordan Casteel, Dapper Dan, Doechii, Ayo Edebiri, Edward Enninful, Jeremy O. Harris, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Rashid Johnson, Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee, Audra McDonald, Janelle Monáe, Jeremy Pope, Angel Reese, Sha’Carri Richardson, Tyla, Usher, and Kara Walker.
Who is expected to attend?
At the Met Gala, the identities of those attending or invited remain private until the big night when celebrities appear on the red carpet. Admission to this event is exclusive and has previously required a ticket that costs around $75,000 each.
