Everything You Need to Know About the 2025 Golden Globes

2025 Golden Globe Awards, held on Sunday, January 5th in Hollywood, may serve purposes beyond offering a platform for speeches and style statements.

The 2025 Golden Globes taking place on January 5th in Hollywood could have functions surpassing merely acting as a venue for speeches and fashion.

Or:

As the curtain rises on awards season, the 2025 Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, Jan. 5, might prove to be about more than just speeches and red carpet style.

In my humble opinion, this current cinematic production is subtly hinting at potential contenders for the prestigious Academy Awards, scheduled for March. This season might just make history by featuring the inaugural nomination of an openly transgender woman in the coveted Best Lead Actress category.

Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s ceremony:

What time does it start and how can I watch it?

The Golden Globe Awards presentation is set to start at 5 p.m. Pacific Time or 8 p.m. Eastern Time this coming Sunday, January 5th, at the Beverly Hilton hotel located in Beverly Hills, California.

1) Option A: You can catch the live show on CBS, or if you’re a Paramount+ subscriber with the Showtime plan, you can stream it live. For those without that specific plan, the ceremony will become available for streaming on Paramount+ from Monday onwards.

Viewers can catch a glimpse of all the latest fashion trends by tuning into the red carpets on Variety and Entertainment Tonight’s websites as early as 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time/6:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Additionally, the Golden Globes website will be streaming their own red carpet event too.

Who is hosting?

Next year’s show will be led by comedian Nikki Glaser – lauded for her wit at the 2024 Tom Brady Roast. Compared to last year’s host, Jo Koy, who faced criticism for his controversial and uneasy jokes at the Golden Globes and was widely criticized by viewers, she might find it less challenging to impress the audience.

A variety of stars will be handing out awards during the event, with Andrew Garfield from “We Live In Time”, Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson from “Moana”, singer Brandi Carlisle, Coleman Domingo known for “Sing Sing”, Nicolas Cage from “Longleg”, and Michelle Yeoh of “Wicked” among them.

Which films, shows, and actors have been nominated?

In the category of film nominations, Jacques Audiard’s movie “Emilia Pérez” has made a significant impact with an unprecedented 10 nominations, making it the most nominated comedy or musical film ever in this award show’s history. Other notable mentions include Sean Baker’s “Cinderella story” titled “Anora“, Edward Berger’s drama about the papacy, “Conclave“, John Chu’s grand musical “Wicked“, Brady Corbet’s period piece “The Brutalist“, and the biopic on Bob Dylan, “A Complete Unknown“.

Notable actors and actresses to keep an eye on in the leading roles are Mikey Madison from Anora, Cynthia Erivo known for her role in Wicked, Karla Sofía Gascón from Emilia Perez, Domingo of Sing Sing’, Nicole Kidman starring in Babygirl, Adrien Brody featured in The Brutalist, and Timothee Chalamet appearing in A Complete Unknown.

Gascón is the first openly transgender woman to receive a leading actress nomination for a film at the Golden Globes. If she wins the Best Actress – Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) award, she would be the first open trans performer to win in a major film acting category at the Globes. Gascón took to Instagram in December to express her joy over her nomination, stating that it brings hope for humanity.

Nominees for the best performance in a supporting role are Ariana Grande from “Wicked”, Selena Gomez from “Emilia Pérez”, and Kieran Culkin from “A Real Pain”.

At the Golden Globes this year, “The Bear” on television received five nominations. This show was a big winner at last year’s ceremony, taking home three awards, including Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Other contenders include “Only Murders in the Building” and the historical drama “Shogun,” which made TIME’s list of the Top 10 TV Shows of 2024. Both shows have earned four nominations each. Additionally, “Nobody Wants This,” a Netflix series starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, has garnered three nominations in total, including recognition for its main actors.
