Premiering in 2018, the show focuses on the dedicated agents of the New York City FBI field office as they work tirelessly to safeguard the city and the nation from a range of domestic dangers. Dick Wolf’s influence is evident throughout FBI, as it deftly combines the standard case-of-the-week format with compelling characters and the weighty authority of the FBI.

The spinoff for the TV show didn’t take much time to happen, and the first season episode titled “Most Wanted” functioned as a precursor for this separate series. Since then, the CBS procedural has been spun off again on multiple occasions, and it is rapidly growing into another extensive TV franchise, with a CIA spinoff coming soon. Similar to other Dick Wolf productions like Law & Order and the One Chicago franchise, FBI thrives due to its vast potential, which could keep the primary series running for many years to come. Despite already having completed six seasons, FBI shows no signs of slowing down.

Critics Found The Shortcomings Of Season 7

Despite the fact that many viewers continue to find FBI entertaining, it’s worth noting that season 7 garnered some criticism from critics, and there may be valid reasons for these complaints. Specifically, two aspects of the show stood out among fans of popular culture this season.

The series often constructs plots that appear significant only to dismiss them with a brief remark later on. For instance, FBI season 7 used this technique when explaining Scola’s frequently changing partners by means of a casual comment from a character, which left the sudden disappearance unexplained. As we pointed out at ScreenRant, “Explanations given in dialogue after the fact lack the excitement compared to watching a story unfold on-screen,” making it an irritating method for the show to progress swiftly to the next plot point.

Comic Book Resources pointed out a concerning pattern in the show that wasn’t related to its dialogue. In their review of season 7’s episode, they mentioned the series appeared to deliberately present storylines involving violence against women. Although it might be an attempt by FBI season 7 to depict real-world perils, CBR stated that the particular episode didn’t provide any justification for enduring that violence, despite the strong acting performances of the cast.

Despite some significant worries, the FBI continues to shine brightly in viewers’ eyes. Granted, ratings saw a dip of approximately 9% compared to season 6 (according to TV Series Finale), but this decline is not unusual for a series that has been running for more than five years. It still manages to draw a decent crowd with over 6 million people tuning in live each week, and interestingly, the season finale even saw a 7% increase in viewership for the season.

Most Of The Cast Returned For Season 7

Shows such as FBI are recognized for maintaining their cast members over extended periods, with minimal shifts from one season to another. Although Season 6 experienced the unfortunate demise of recurring character Trevor Hobbs, portrayed by Roshawn Franklin, major characters tend to remain consistent. With this consistency in mind, the cast of FBI Season 7 bears a strong resemblance to that of Season 6, as Missy Peregrym returns to reprise her role as Special Agent Maggie Bell, accompanied by the rest of her trusted team members.

Katherine Renee Kane, who came on board in season 3 and played Special Agent Tiffany Wallace, returned for season 7 but ultimately left the show. Taking over her role is fresh face Lisette Olivera, portraying Syd, a new addition to the Behavioral Analysis Unit.

A Case-Per-Week Format Continues

In the final episode of FBI Season 6, the storyline didn’t veer drastically from its original path, as the team effectively took down Hakim and provided a measure of emotional resolution for Wallace following the loss of her undercover partner in the premiere. As for FBI Season 7, it follows the typical structure of popular procedurals, focusing on a weekly case format where the agents grapple with some of New York City’s most formidable adversaries.

During the course of the show’s season, one of the significant ongoing themes is determining who will take over Tiffany’s role on the team. A series of guest stars have temporarily filled the position, but none have been confirmed as permanent cast members yet. The finale of FBI season 7 introduced a plot that could develop into a more extensive storyline in the upcoming season, as it was revealed that the government agency is being undermined by traitors, potentially jeopardizing the team’s safety.

How The FBI Season 7 Finale Sets Up Season 8

The Show Left The Audience With A Lot Of Questions

The final episode of season 7 for the FBI series intensified the usual case-of-the-week tension for the team by making it personal. It also left many unanswered questions for season 8. What was particularly striking was the discovery that the New York field office had been secretly infiltrated by members of the group Forefront. Throughout the season, the team struggled to identify and eliminate traitors while deciding whom to trust. Sadly, one of the Assistant Directors lost their life, while another was taken into custody. These events have created vacancies in the field office leadership that will need to be addressed in FBI season 8.

The show will need to decide if they should add a regular new team member following Tiffany’s exit. Although Emily Alabi seemed to take on the role as Dani, Scola’s latest partner in the closing episodes of FBI season 7, it has not been confirmed yet that she is part of the main cast.

In the final episode of the current season, it’s implied that the hunt for traitors isn’t fully concluded yet, as Agent Castille collapses right after discussing this matter with the team. When FBI returns for its eighth season, it will need to address the question of whether Castille survived the season finale or if the team must find a new leader in addition to filling all those vacant higher-up positions.
