Everything you need to know about Death before the ‘Agatha All Along’ finale
As a longtime Marvel fan who’s seen more than a few comic books and movies in my time, I must say that “Agatha All Along” has been a delightful surprise. And Aubrey Plaza as Death? Brilliant casting!
This story contains spoilers for Episode 7 of “Agatha All Along.”
Throughout the show “Agatha All Along,” one truth has been underscored: mortality affects us all. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, death appears as Aubrey Plaza.
In the seventh episode of Disney+’s series titled “Death’s Hand in Mine,” it is revealed that the enigmatic and charming character played by Plaza, Rio, is actually Death. This secret is unveiled when Lilia (Patti LuPone), a divination witch, conducts a final tarot reading to conclude her quest. Through her psychic abilities, she discerns the true nature of their fellow traveler who had strayed from the group.
“Rio. She’s Death,” says Lilia after saving her coven from imminent impalement.
When pressed for confirmation, Agatha acknowledges, “I like the bad boys.”
From Lilia’s visions, it appears that the true identity of Rio has been subtly suggested in the earlier episodes. One of the clearest indications is the Ouija board spelling out ‘DEATH’ in Episode 5.
Towards the end of Episode 7, Lilia encourages Lila, Billy (Joe Locke), and Jen (Sasheer Zamata) to keep going along the Witches’ Path, facing any challenges that may come their way.
Since we’ve discovered that every path converges at her location, let me share with you the details about Death and her past events.
Who is Death?
In the Marvel Universe, Death (with a capital D) is a cosmic figure symbolizing death and mortality. This character was initially introduced in “Captain Marvel” issue 26 by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich, as an enigmatic associate of Thanos – yes, the very same Thanos.
In contrast to previous portrayals of death within Marvel narratives, this cosmic incarnation of the character is rooted back to a 1973 comic. Known alternately as Mistress Death or Lady Death, this hooded figure often appears in tales set among the stars. Essentially indestructible, Death wields tremendous power, enabling her to control time and matter.
Death has encountered characters such as Mar-Vell, members of the Fantastic Four, and the Grandmaster, among others. However, she is most famously associated with Thanos, who harbored unrequited feelings for her. In the comics, Thanos’ pursuit of the Infinity Stones was essentially an effort to win her affection.
Currently, it appears very improbable that Death, as portrayed in the MCU, will have any connections with Thanos because his storyline has already concluded. Moreover, there are still many enigmas surrounding “Agatha All Along” that need resolving, such as where Rio was during the final trial.
What do we know about Rio Vidal?
Since entering Agatha’s mysterious vision of a crime scene, people have hinted that Rio might be hiding something deeper than her apparent self.
Agatha and Rio share a past connection, one that seems to continue to tug at them even though their relationship may be long over.
It appears that under the rules or circumstances, Rio has been forbidden from taking Agatha’s life, regardless of Agatha’s intentions. Furthermore, it seems that neither Agatha can end Rio’s life nor absorb Rio’s abilities.
In the early goodbyes between Rio and Agatha, she said “I’ll see you,” which might hint at Rio’s background being Spanish-speaking or could be significant for future episodes of the series. We’ll find out soon enough. (This version maintains the original meaning while making it more conversational and easy to understand.)
In Episode 5, Rio expresses dislike towards apparitions, as Agatha’s mother made an appearance. However, it could be that Rio merely dislikes her ex-partner’s mother.
In the MCU’s WandaVision, Rio introduces herself as “not so much a green witch, but The Green Witch” when she encounters Agatha’s coven on the Witches’ Road. This implies that Death might not only control death in this universe, but also life cycles, including regeneration, renewal, and rebirth. We will have to wait until Wednesday’s “Agatha All Along” finale to discover what truly lies at the end of the Witches’ Road following all the deaths along the way.
