CBS has ordered another season of NCIS, ensuring the popular naval drama will return for its 24th season. NCIS is among the longest-running scripted series on network television, trailing only Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU on NBC. While the show previously centered around Mark Harmon’s character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, season 23 marked the beginning of a new chapter for the series.
With over 500 episodes aired, the NCIS franchise is a television powerhouse. To boost viewership, CBS will dedicate Tuesday nights to NCIS programming during the 2025-2026 season, moving NCIS, NCIS: Origins, and NCIS: Sydney to that night. All three series have also been renewed, proving the franchise is here to stay.
What Happened in NCIS Season 23?
The new season of NCIS kicks off with a compelling case for Parker (Gary Cole), who became the team leader after Gibbs retired. In the premiere episode, Parker bends the rules while searching for Carla Marino (Rebecca De Moray), the woman who murdered Alden’s father, Roman Parker (Francis X. McCarthy), at the end of last season.
The first episode centers on Parker as he deals with two significant events: shooting Carla Marino and scattering his father’s ashes at sea with his sister, Vice Admiral Harriet Parker (Nancy Travis). He also asks Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) to locate his mother’s grave, which leads Jimmy to discover the unsettling truth about how Evelyn Parker died, kicking off an investigation.
The case involving Parker’s mother is resolved when Alden finally finds Lily (Barbara Niven), the girl from his visions, now grown up. He shares the story of his mother’s bravery with someone who knew her as a child. The episode ends with Evelyn Parker’s funeral, marking a significant turning point in the first half of Season 23 for the agent.
Season 23 continues to explore the developing relationship between Nick Torres and Jessica Knight. Jessica is now part of the NCIS Elite team, and the season’s mid-season finale features a surprise appearance by Eleanor Bishop, hinting at what’s to come in the rest of the season.
Who Stars in CBS’s NCIS?
For twenty years, the popular Navy drama NCIS has been known for its strong team. Season 23 continues that tradition, bringing back beloved original cast members alongside some new faces. Brian Dietzen as Jimmy Palmer and Sean Murray as Special Agent Timothy McGee have both been with the show since the very beginning, and have been key parts of its success.
The Major Case Response Team (MCRT) features both veteran and newer agents, including Nick Torres, played by Wilmer Valderrama, and Jessica Knight, played by Katrina Law. Led by Supervisory Special Agent Alden Parker (Gary Cole), the team also includes Kasie Hines, played by Diona Reasonover, who works with the Washington MCRT.
Vance has been leading the team for nearly two decades, and Carroll is one of the show’s most experienced actors. It’s currently unknown if NCIS Season 24 will see changes to the cast – whether that means adding new faces or saying goodbye to some current ones – or if the existing team will stay together.
The show has already seen many of its original, beloved characters leave – including Kate Todd, Ziva David, Tony DiNozzo, and Abby Sciuto – over the years. However, the actors who remain have been with the series for a long time and provide a solid base.
The show has also said goodbye to Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, the former NCIS Medical Examiner. Following the death of David McCallum, the actor who played Ducky in recent seasons, Season 21 honored both the character and McCallum. Beyond the main cast, NCIS has always featured a wide range of memorable guest stars, which is a cornerstone of the show’s success.
When Does NCIS Season 24 Premiere?
Now that it’s been renewed for Season 24, remains a key part of CBS’s programming. Recently, CBS has typically launched new seasons in mid-October, so viewers can likely anticipate Season 24 around then – or possibly even in September.
As a big fan, I’m glad to hear NCIS will probably stay on Tuesdays at 8 pm Eastern! CBS just moved it alongside the new NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Sydney, which is great news. And it’s not just NCIS – they also renewed a bunch of other shows I love, like Georgia & Mandy’s First Marriage, Matlock, Elsbeth, and Fire Country! It’s a good time to be a TV viewer.
