Everything we know about House of the Dragon season 3 so far
As a die-hard fan of all things Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and dread as we approach the penultimate season of the latter. With only two seasons left, it feels like the end of an era, much like when Robert’s Rebellion finally came to a close in the original series.
On August 4, 2024, the season finale of “House of the Dragon,” titled “The Queen Who Ever Was,” aired on HBO and MAX. As usual, fans can’t wait for the next installment of this popular spin-off from the “Game of Thrones” series.
As a long-time fan of the Game of Thrones saga, I can hardly contain my excitement about the announcement of House of the Dragon season 3! Ever since the prequel series was first announced, I’ve been eagerly awaiting each new episode and development in the story. The fact that HBO has already greenlit a third season before the second one even premieres speaks volumes about their commitment to the franchise and the quality of the show.
House of the Dragon season 3 starts filming in early 2025
Based on statements from showrunner Ryan Condal, work on Season 3 of “House of the Dragon” is expected to begin around early 2025. The announcement was made by Variety just one day after the season 2 finale aired on both HBO and MAX.
It’s currently unclear exactly how long the production for season 3 of Condal will take, but it seems reasonable to anticipate that it will extend well into the following year.
Previously, the duration of filming for the initial two seasons has shown some fluctuation. Unlike the second season that consisted of just eight episodes, filmed over a span of six months, the first season, with its total of ten episodes, took nearly ten months to produce. However, there were hold-ups due to pandemic constraints, scheduling complications, and other unforeseen difficulties.
Based on our predictions for season 3, it seems probable that filming will conclude by late 2025. However, we eagerly anticipate an official announcement regarding this matter.
Has the House of the Dragon season 3 release date been announced?
The specific date for the third season of “House of the Dragon” hasn’t been disclosed as of now. Since it’s still quite some time away, HBO has not revealed the entire schedule for season 3 yet.
While we can estimate approximately when the season might resume, it’s unfortunate that we’ll likely need to be patient for quite some time.
It appears that the general consensus is that we might have to wait until 2026 for the third season of “House of the Dragon” to debut, although HBO hasn’t officially confirmed this yet. Given the show’s massive scale in terms of production, special effects, and CGI, such a delay would not come as a surprise.
In her Instagram stories following the season 2 finale, Olivia Cooke posted a picture and captioned it, “Thanks, I’ll catch up with you in 2 years, love xo.”
It appears that it’s widely believed that the third season of House of the Dragon will air on HBO and MAX around 2026, possibly in the summer of 2026. This aligns with the pattern we’ve seen so far, as the first two seasons premiered in the summer of 2022 and 2024 respectively, suggesting that this trend will continue for season 3.
In a recent press conference through IGN, as highlighted by Condal, they are creating several standalone movies based on each season. Additionally, Condal expressed regret for the prolonged gap between seasons.
The show is so complex that we’re really making multiple feature films every season, so I apologize for the wait, but I will just say, if Rook’s Rest and the Red Sowing are any indication, the team that we have together, we’re gunna pull off a hell of a win with the Battle of the Gullet in the future.
Release prediction: Summer 2026

How the House of the Dragon season 2 finale sets up season 3
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my exhilaration over the gripping conclusion of House of the Dragon’s season 2, titled “The Queen Who Ever Was.” For those who have delved into George R.R. Martin’s epic tome Fire & Blood, it comes as no surprise that we’re edging towards the monumental Battle of the Gullet. This is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated battle sequences in the series, and considering the pace of the storyline, I suspect we’ll witness this historic clash early in season 3.
Towards the close of season 2, Alicent implores Rhaenyra to halt the impending chaos, seize King’s Landing, and bring an end to the war before it ignites. It’s intriguing that Alicent, who earlier believed she held the advantage, refused a comparable proposition from Rhaenyra. Indeed, Rhaenyra is correct; it’s now too late to prevent this conflict. War is on its way. War has already arrived.
In the finale of the second series, the Houses such as the Lannisters, Starks, and others, along with their supporters, prepare for battle and set out towards the warfront.
In the season finale, there were quite a few intriguing twists, too. One of them was when Daemon Targaryen got a glimpse of the vision behind Aegon’s prophecy, A Song of Ice and Fire. He swore loyalty to Rhaenyra, with the aim of uniting the realm and vanquishing the White Walkers. Frankly, I can’t help but think that’s wishful thinking on everyone’s part.
Furthermore, Aegon II is making his way towards the frontier with Larys Strong. To survive this conflict, it seems he must depart from Westeros, yet he intends to come back.
Reminding myself not to overlook it, there’s an intriguing matter concerning Aemond and Helaena that we should address. Eager as ever, Aemond suggests a hasty assault on Harrenhal, hoping to engage before Rhaenyra can deploy the other dragons. However, Helaena, unlike her brother, is hesitant. She voices her reasons for refusal.
She reveals to Aemond a vision that she had about Aegon returning as King and Aemond, gulp, dying at something called the God’s Eye.
So, that’s basically where things stand heading into the penultimate season of House of the Dragon.
Penultimate? That can’t be right, right? Well, it is!
House of the Dragon season 4 is the final season of the series
Based on Variety’s report, the fourth season of “House of the Dragon” marks the end of the “Game of Thrones” prequel series. That means there are only two seasons remaining. Given the amount of ground they need to cover, it seems like we’re in for a fast-paced journey with some significant pauses before reaching the finish line. Nevertheless, we’re all geared up for this exciting ride!
As a dedicated fan of the Game of Thrones franchise who has been following every twist and turn since its inception, I can confidently say that I am genuinely excited about the upcoming third season of “House of the Dragon.” While we don’t have an exact episode count yet, knowing it will likely be between 8-10 episodes gives me a sense of anticipation.
Somehow, neither seem like enough.
What to watch while you wait for House of the Dragon season 3
As a die-hard fan of fantasy series, I must say that I am beyond excited about the upcoming season 2 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” Given my long wait for the premiere of season 3 of my favorite show, I’m grateful to have another fantastic series to look forward to. My love for Middle-earth and its mythology runs deep, having grown up reading J.R.R. Tolkien’s books multiple times over. The first season of “The Rings of Power” was a visual feast that perfectly captured the magic and grandeur of this enchanting world. With the new season only weeks away, I can hardly contain my anticipation! Based on the mesmerizing trailer, it seems that the creators have outdone themselves yet again, crafting an unforgettable journey through Middle-earth’s rich tapestry of history and legend. I eagerly await the August 29, 2024 premiere and cannot wait to lose myself in this magical world once more!
Absolutely, there’s another exciting Amazon series coming up for us – “The Wheel of Time”. It’s expected to return for its third season in 2025. We don’t have an exact release date yet, but since filming has wrapped up, it might be available as early as spring or summer of 2025 on Prime Video. However, there’s a possibility that we’ll have to wait until the fall of 2025 as that’s typically when Prime Video releases its fantasy series.
Additionally, HBO is developing another prequel to “Game of Thrones,” titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” As per HBO’s announcement, this series is expected to premiere in the year 2025.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news for our upcoming viewing schedule! Next year, we’ve got a new season of The Witcher, featuring the talented Liam Hemsworth. Plus, there’s more! Stranger Things, Wednesday, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians will also return with their new seasons.
