Everything to Know About the 2025 Oscars
Despite the tragic L.A. fires that have claimed at least 28 lives and reduced thousands of structures to ashes across the county, the 97th Academy Awards will press on.
The aftermath of the wildfires and the local community’s resilience are expected to shape the atmosphere for an upcoming event. This event is scheduled to take place in early March and will be presided over by popular comedian and TV host, Conan O’ Brien.
In a statement released on January 13th, the leaders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expressed their deep sorrow over the destruction caused by the fires, and the significant losses felt by many within our film community. The Academy has historically served as a bond between industry professionals, and they reaffirmed their dedication to supporting one another during difficult times.
Here’s everything to know about the 2025 Oscars.
When and where are the Oscars being held?
The Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Ovation Hollywood on March 2nd (Sunday). The initial part of the event, the red carpet, will be broadcast from 6:30 p.m ET, while the show proper starts a bit later at 7:00 p.m ET. This earlier start time, which is an hour ahead of the traditional 8:00 p.m start time, was introduced last year. It allows viewers to finish earlier and for ABC to schedule additional programming once the ceremony concludes.
How can I watch?
The Oscars will broadcast live on your local ABC channel. If you have a subscription to Hulu Live TV, YouTube TV, AT&T TV, or FuboTV, you’ll also be able to watch it live on those platforms. For viewers outside the U.S., the show will be available in over 200 countries. You can verify availability here.
Who is hosting?
As a proud supporter, I’m thrilled to share that I, Conan O’Brien – a laureate of the prestigious Emmy Award in comedy – am set to take the stage as this year’s host for the Oscars! I’ll be joining an illustrious list of fellow comedians who have graced the event with their wit, including Jimmy Kimmel, Chris Rock, and David Letterman. This will mark my debut as the Oscars host, but I’ve had previous experience in hosting other prestigious ceremonies and events such as the Emmys (in 2002 and 2006) and the White House Correspondents’ dinners (in 1995 and 2013). Can’t wait to bring some laughter to the big screen!
In a statement issued last November, Oscar executives Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan declared that Conan possesses the essential traits of an exceptional Oscars host: he is sharp-witted, captivating, and hilarious. They’ve also noted his expertise in handling live television events. Excited for the collaboration, they aim to create a vibrant, innovative, and celebratory show that will be the highlight of Hollywood’s grandest night.
In 2024 and 2023, Jimmy Kimmel had his turn as the host, a role that came after a phase of experimentation where the producers tried out several hosts or none at all for the event. Now, in 2025, Conan O’Brien steps into the hosting position, replacing Kimmel.
Which movies and actors are nominated this year?
This awards season, the most significant films have earned nominations in prominent Oscar categories, such as “The Brutalist,” “Emilia Pérez,” and “Conclave.” Notably, “Emilia Pérez” has garnered the highest number of nominations with a total of 13. However, the movie has faced criticism for its portrayal of Mexicans and transgender individuals, with the film failing to secure a nomination at the GLAAD awards, which recognize fair and accurate representations of LGBTQ+ individuals in media. “Wicked” and “The Brutalist” trail closely behind with 10 nominations each.
When the nominations were revealed, there were a few unexpected moments. The film “I’m Still Here,” an international production, was surprisingly nominated for Best Picture, as well as being contenders in the categories of International Feature Film and Best Actress for Fernanda Torre. However, Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” didn’t make the cut, missing out on both screenplay and Best Original Score nominations. Interestingly, composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who won for Best Original Score at the 2025 Golden Globes with this same category for “Challengers,” were left empty-handed in this instance.
The nominees were announced on Thursday, Jan. 23, by actors Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang.
How have the L.A. fires impacted Oscar season?
The award ceremony is scheduled for two months following the ignition of the Los Angeles County fires, which firefighters continue to combat. At one time, the blaze from these wildfires endangered notable landmarks such as the Hollywood Bowl, the TCL Chinese Theatre, and the Dolby Theatre where the Oscars are hosted. Fortunately, these locations have thus far remained untouched; however, countless structures and residences, including those of celebrities like Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Milo Ventimiglia, and Billy Crystal, have been razed to the ground.
Due to the fires, the Academy decided to prolong the voting period for the Oscars nominations, thus delaying the announcement of these nominations, which were initially scheduled for January 17. In a press release, Kramer and Yang stated, “Our members consistently emphasize the importance of unity within our community, and we are committed to using this situation as an opportunity to honor our strong and empathetic industry.” They also expressed eagerness to acknowledge frontline workers who have assisted with the fires, recognize those affected, and inspire people to join the Academy in contributing to the relief efforts.
