12 Pairs of Actors and Directors With Famous Feuds

Björk and Lars von Trier

As a passionate cinephile, I can easily picture the intense nature of Lars von Trier’s filmmaking process. He doesn’t shy away from pushing his actors and characters to their limits, as evidenced during the production of “Dancer in the Dark.” The relationship between von Trier and Björk, the singer portraying the lead role, became strained due to von Trier’s behavior on set. Björk allegedly expressed her displeasure by spitting on the floor when greeting von Trier and ignoring him for extended periods, while von Trier reportedly lost his temper, throwing a chair at a monitor and shattering it. Björk publicly accused von Trier and the producers of attempting to brand her as “difficult,” and later penned accounts detailing repeated instances of sexual harassment from an unnamed Danish director, whose identity is widely speculated to be von Trier (though he denies these allegations).

George Clooney and David O. Russell

David O. Russell is a director known for his strong personality and intense directing methods, which are frequently discussed. During the filming of the war comedy “Three Kings,” there were reported tensions between Russell and George Clooney. The production was challenging due to Russell’s improvisational approach, which added to the stress of shooting in a desert. Clooney is said to have frequently intervened on behalf of actors and crew members, protecting them from Russell’s outbursts. There are stories that he helped an extra who had a seizure on set while Russell did nothing, told the director to stop shouting at a truck driver, and even physically intervened when he saw Russell mistreating an extra not executing a stunt properly. In 2024, Clooney commented about his project choices and time management, saying, “I’m going to do a great film like ‘Three Kings,’ and I’m going to have a miserable experience with a difficult director like David O Russell making my life – and everyone else’s on the crew – hell.” He concluded that it’s not worth the hassle at this stage in his life.

Robert Downey Jr. and David Fincher

Additionally, we have David Fincher, known for his prolonged shooting days and countless retakes of a single scene, which has led to some heated encounters with actors he’s collaborated with. One such actor is Robert Downey Jr., who felt the brunt of Fincher’s directing style during the filming of their serial killer drama, “Zodiac.” Downey expressed his discontent with the demanding schedule and found it challenging to adapt to his usual work methods. In fact, Fincher himself claimed that Downey would retaliate by leaving Mason jars filled with his own urine on set as a form of protest.

Katherine Heigl and Judd Apatow

In an interview with Vanity Fair, actress Katherine Heigl criticized Judd Apatow’s comedy “Knocked Up” for its portrayal of gender roles, claiming that it portrayed women as humorless and uptight, while men were depicted as lovable, goofy characters. She felt the film was slightly sexist, saying it made the female characters seem like shrews, and she found it difficult to appreciate the movie on some days, despite generally enjoying the production.

Megan Fox and Michael Bay

During the peak of Megan Fox’s fame in the Transformers series, she spoke up in defense of director Michael Bay against criticisms concerning his handling of her, such as having her dance seductively in Bad Boys II at the age of 15. She also refuted a rumor that he made her wash his car during her Transformers audition. However, following the release of the second film in the series, which was widely regarded as one of the worst sequels ever, she openly criticized Bay’s autocratic directing style, likening it to Hitler and Napoleon in a very frank post-production analysis. After this, she did not appear in any more Transformers movies, leading many to speculate that she was dismissed from the franchise due to her unfavorable comments.

Val Kilmer and Joel Schumacher

Throughout the ’90s Batman film series, several actors portrayed the Caped Crusader. This was partly because director Joel Schumacher and actor Val Kilmer had conflicts on the set of Batman Forever, which led Schumacher to frequently criticize Kilmer in public interviews. It’s said that Kilmer behaved rather arrogantly during filming, demanding to be addressed as “Mr. Kilmer,” arriving late to set, and more. In a later Vulture interview, Schumacher referred to Kilmer as “psychotic,” but also praised him as “a fabulous Batman.” Interestingly, in a Q&A following a different movie screening, Schumacher even called Kilmer “the best Batman.

Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been following the ongoing drama between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, stemming from their romantic film “It Ends With Us.” Despite the dust settling, it seems there are still unresolved issues. The red carpet premiere was notably tense, with both parties conducting press interviews separately. Things escalated when Lively accused the director of sexual harassment, going as far as filing a lawsuit against him and the production company. Baldoni retaliated by suing the New York Times for libel, claiming that Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds mocked him through the “Nicepool” character in Deadpool & Wolverine. The chain of lawsuits could potentially lead to a trial, and might even halt the production of the sequel, It Starts With Us, given Baldoni’s ownership of the rights and Lively’s reluctance to work with him again.

Christopher Plummer and Terrence Malick

Terrence Malick is known for removing entire actors from his films with minimal notice or reducing most of their scenes substantially. In the movie The New World, Christopher Plummer portrays Captain Christopher Newport. Although he remains in the film, it’s evident that he expected a larger role when he first joined the project. In a letter to Malick, Plummer expressed his dissatisfaction: “I criticized him. I won’t work with him again, obviously. He doesn’t want me. I told him, ‘You are dull. You get stuck in these routines. You need a writer.'” Particularly upsetting for Plummer was that a powerful emotional speech he delivered for the film ended up as background noise for another scene. Later, he explained, “He keeps writing, overwriting, and overwriting until it sounds pretentious. It takes a lot of effort to make it sound genuine. Then, he edits his films in such a way that he cuts everyone out of the story.

Florence Pugh and Olivia Wilde

In the lead-up to the release of “Don’t Worry Darling,” actress Florence Pugh was unable to participate in promotional activities due to scheduling conflicts with “Dune: Part Two.” Despite this, she and director Olivia Wilde never appeared together publicly, though they exchanged subtle jabs on social media. It was later revealed that Wilde was dating Harry Styles while in a relationship with Jason Sudeikis, which some speculate led to tension between Pugh and the director. However, sources close to the production claim there was no significant conflict, although reports of a heated argument between Pugh and Wilde during filming have emerged. To date, Pugh has remained silent on the matter, choosing not to address it in interviews. Wilde, on the other hand, has consistently praised Pugh, calling her “a force” in the movie.

Burt Reynolds and Paul Thomas Anderson

It’s not controversial to assert that Boogie Nights is one of the greatest films ever made by a top-notch director, but the late Burt Reynolds might have disagreed – primarily because director Paul Thomas Anderson was the one who made it. Reynolds was quite critical of Anderson’s reported ego on set, expressing his thoughts to GQ later: “I believe he was young and full of himself. Every shot we did, it seemed like the first time that shot had ever been done. I remember the first shot in Boogie Nights, where I drive the car to Grauman’s Theater. After he said, ‘Isn’t that amazing?’ And I mentioned five other movies with similar shots. It wasn’t original.” When asked if he would be interested in working with Anderson again, Reynolds responded negatively. “Personality-wise, we didn’t mesh,” he explained.

Julia Roberts and Steven Spielberg

On the set of “Hook,” tension between Julia Roberts and Steven Spielberg wasn’t primarily work-related, but stemmed from personal struggles. Following a high-profile breakup with her former fiancé Kiefer Sutherland, Roberts was reportedly susceptible to emotional outbursts and unpredictable mood swings on set, often retreating to her trailer for extended periods and arriving late. Later, Spielberg was understanding about the situation, stating: “Julia was experiencing some of the most challenging moments in her life during filming. Unfortunately, it just so happened that she began work on ‘Hook’ at that difficult time.

Bruce Willis and Kevin Smith

We had some disagreements about our work methods. I don’t have a solution for him. I never intend to publicly criticize or confront him. Sometimes we just don’t see eye-to-eye.
