Obscure Streaming TV Shows You Might Not Have Heard Of
A.P. Bio
The witty yet underappreciated NBC and Peacock series titled A.P. Bio, which unfortunately had a premature end, didn’t receive the recognition it should have while it was on air. Despite boasting a talented cast (Glenn Howerton, Patton Oswalt) and production team that includes comedy heavyweights like Lorne Michaels and Seth Meyers, many viewers missed out on its comedic charm. In this series, Glenn Howerton plays Jack Griffin, a former Harvard philosophy professor who returns to his hometown following the loss of his prestigious position, only to find himself in charge of teaching Advanced Placement high school biology at his local school. Fueled by a desire for revenge against those who wronged him, Jack deceives his students into believing they will learn no biology, and instead aims to exploit their academic prowess to settle old scores.
Calls
Film director Fede Álvarez is recognized as the creator of the American adaptation of the audio-focused series titled “Calls”. In this show, viewers are immersed in phone conversations among characters whose personal issues are often amplified or complicated by an impending catastrophic event. This Apple TV+ production, which is an adaption of a French series with a similar format, features the voices of stars like Lily Collins, Danny Pudi, Clancy Brown, and Pedro Pascal. Each episode presents a standalone narrative that impacts a larger, seemingly supernatural storyline.
Mosaic
Occasionally, filmmaker Steven Soderbergh ventures into television production, and even the attempts that don’t quite hit the mark are still intriguing. One such experiment was “Mosaic,” which emerged during a period when tech firms and streaming platforms were trying to determine the next major innovation in entertainment (remember Quibi?). “Mosaic” was one of these trials. This interactive murder mystery was primarily distributed through an app, allowing viewers to choose their own perspective for each event, and navigate forward and backward along a complex timeline to uncover every character’s actions and motives at specific times. However, since not many people are keen on investing that much effort into watching television, it was later broadcast on HBO in a more conventional episodic format.
Mrs. Davis
As a movie critic, I found myself utterly captivated by the eccentric and thought-provoking limited series, “Mrs. Davis.” Despite its vibrant feathered title perhaps deterring a broader audience, it showcases the signature flair for the fantastical that co-creator Damon Lindelof is renowned for.
In this narrative, Betty Gilpin masterfully portrays Sister Simone, a nun who finds herself at odds with an artificially intelligent app named Mrs. Davis, which has seemingly benevolently assumed control of the world. Haunted by the belief that this app was responsible for her father’s demise, Sister Simone demands that it be erased—a demand to which Mrs. Davis agrees, under one condition: Sister Simone must locate the Holy Grail.
The ensuing adventure is a mesmerizing tapestry woven from elements as diverse as cowboys, charlatan magicians, sinister Germans, colossal whales, and Arthurian legends, all culminating in an ingenious story that defies belief—all within the confines of just 8 episodes. If you’re looking for a limited series that will stretch your imagination to its limits and keep you guessing until the very end, “Mrs. Davis” is a must-watch.
Red Oaks
Located in mid-1980s New York and New Jersey, the TV series “Red Oaks” follows the story of David Myers (known for “Submarine”), who spends his college summer break working as a tennis instructor at a Jewish country club. The majority of the show takes place at the Red Oaks club, and it explores the time when adolescence gives way to adulthood, depicting the diverse relationships and changes experienced by David, his family, friends, and colleagues during a tumultuous historical era. The show boasts Steven Soderbergh as one of its executive producers, along with David Gordon Green, who is known for “Eastbound and Down” and “Vice Principals”.
Scavengers Reign
In its time, the most exceptional works often go unnoticed, and unfortunately, that’s been the case for the animated sci-fi series “Scavengers Reign“. Despite being accessible on both Max and Netflix, it remains relatively unknown. The story revolves around a band of survivors from a damaged spaceship stranded on an alien planet teeming with potentially fungal-based life forms that are hostile. As the human refugees navigate this perilous terrain, they gradually realize that the planet’s ecosystem is fragile and at risk due to the fear, violence, and greed brought about by their presence.
Sugar
In Sugar, starring Colin Farrell, we can’t give away its one-of-a-kind charm, but trust us, you won’t predict what happens next. This neo-noir series follows private detective John Sugar, a lover of vintage films and classic cars, who finds himself in deep trouble when investigating the disappearance of a renowned movie producer’s granddaughter. The show initially seems like a traditional detective story, but it’s not until nearly the end that it unveils itself as something completely unexpected.
Sunny
In Colin O’Sullivan’s 2018 novel “The Dark Manual”, the movie “Sunny” features Rashida Jones as Suzie Sakamoto. After losing her husband and son in a plane crash, she receives a domestic robot named Sunny from her husband’s robotics company. However, Suzie had no knowledge that her husband was involved with robots, and as she delves into his enigmatic past, assisted occasionally by Sunny, she unearths a perilous conspiracy linked to these machines.
Tales From the Loop
People who use Tumblr might remember the captivating, mysterious images of Simon Stålenhag, whose digital paintings with a retro-futuristic theme frequently depicted towering, rusted robot giants from past times of conflict or technological perfection amidst expansive natural settings. The art book titled “Tales From the Loop” compiling these images was picked up by Amazon Prime for a streaming series, where each episode spun a story around a small town that housed an experimental research facility. While the episodes aren’t tightly connected and it ran only one season, its haunting ambiance makes it worth watching.
Too Old to Die Young
In a shift from his cinematic work, thriller director Nicolas Winding Refn ventured into television with the series “Too Old to Die Young“, an intensely colored modern-noir production. Miles Teller plays a cop who’s compelled to partner with the individual who killed his fellow officer, to expose a complex and brutal conspiracy involving Mexican cartels, Japanese gangs, and the Russian mafia. While Refn’s distinctive directing style prevents the show from succumbing entirely to its masculine narrative tendencies, some viewers might find the plot too intricate and bizarre to follow. The series ran for just one season. Fans of Refn’s work will recognize what they’re getting into, while others may be captivated by the lengthy, episode-long car chase sequence in which Teller is pursued relentlessly by a pair of shady pornographers.
