Everyone loves K-2SO — even Alan Tudyk

In Star Wars, there are numerous droids displaying a sarcastic and sassy demeanor, a trend that has grown more prominent over time. Among these, some stand out for their loyalty towards their masters while managing to maintain their unique, humorous characteristics within their typically strict programming. Ultimately, they will go to great lengths – even risking their own existence – to safeguard those they hold dear.

Initially, the former imperial droid K-2SO captured the affection of Star Wars enthusiasts upon his debut in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Later on, he resurfaced for a short yet delightful cameo during the second season of Star Wars: Andor, released in 2025. It transpires that there’s a substantial reason this droid is held in such high regard. Not only do fans cherish him, but so does the actor who gives him life.

Alan Tudyk voiced the character K-2SO in both “Rogue One” and “Andor,” and received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Voiceover Performance in a Television Series after its end, for his exceptional work.

In conversation with Playlist, Tudyk (an actor known for his work beyond Star Wars) discussed the freedom he enjoyed while delivering K-2SO’s lines. He mentioned that during the filming of Rogue One, the director provided him numerous chances to intensify K-2’s prearranged sarcasm, making it even more pronounced.

The director, Gareth Edwards, had a more relaxed approach to directing, as he explained. In most cases, the dialogues were delivered as written during initial takes, but afterwards, I was given the freedom to improvise or amplify K-2SO’s sarcasm since my face wasn’t visible on camera. This allowed for funnier versions of the lines.

The appeal of K-2 is significantly enhanced by this, to put it mildly. Often, the most effective jokes arise spontaneously, and when combined with the actor’s delivery, camera angles, and editing, they can generate some of the most humorous scenes in a film. Despite Rogue One having a more somber tone than other Star Wars films, K-2’s comedic relief is genuinely refreshing.

As a dedicated fan, I must admit that there’s something incredibly amusing about the way an actor like Alan Tudyk delivers his lines as a droid character. The humor lies in the fact that droids, such as K-2, have limited range to change their intonation. This results in Tudyk’s lines often sounding like deadpan deliveries, given the robotic voice behind them. The unique blend of Tudyk’s performance and the droid character makes for an entertaining viewing experience that I always look forward to.

When an actor truly relishes their character’s part, it significantly enhances the viewing experience for the audience. Actors are skilled at convincingly appearing to enjoy themselves, even when they don’t. However, Tudyk didn’t need much effort to show his joy. Given this, it’s unsurprising that he was eager to revive the role for the series Andor, and as he shared with Playlist, would gladly take on the role again if a similar opportunity arises in the future.
