Everyone Is Flocking to The Croods: A New Age on Streaming

Viewers on Peacock are really enjoying content from DreamWorks Animation. Several of their shows and movies, like The Croods: A New Age, are proving popular on the streaming service.

As of December 16th, The Croods: A New Age is the most popular movie on Peacock in the U.S., according to FlixPatrol. It’s been the top choice for nearly a week, with a brief dip to second place on December 14th due to The Bad Guys 2. However, The Bad Guys 2 has since dropped to number 5 on Peacock’s top 10 list.

Besides Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, three other DreamWorks Animation films are popular on Peacock right now. Shrek 2, Shrek, and Shrek the Third are currently ranked as the 2nd, 6th, and 7th most-watched movies in the U.S., respectively. Completing the top 10 are the live-action and animated Grinch movies (at No. 2 and No. 8), Pitch Perfect (No. 4), Die Hard (No. 9), and Nobody 2 (No. 10).

A New Age Introduced the Croods to the Bettermans

Released in theaters on November 25, 2020, The Croods: A New Age is a sequel to the 2013 film The Croods. The new movie picks up where the first one left off, following the Croods family as they stumble upon a perfect, sheltered paradise. Their peaceful new life is complicated by the Bettermans, another family who are a bit more advanced in their evolution. Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds return as the voices of Grug, Eep, and Guy, and they’re joined by Leslie Mann, Peter Dinklage, and Kelly Marie Tran, who play the Bettermans.

Although A New Age was better received by critics than The Croods, it didn’t perform as well at the box office. The sequel earned $215 million globally on a $65 million budget, which was significantly less than the original film’s $587 million earnings in 2013. It’s important to remember, though, that A New Age came out during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many people were still reluctant to go to movie theaters, and this likely impacted its ticket sales.

As a big fan of The Croods, I always considered The Croods: A New Age to be the end of the story. But I was surprised to learn there was more! From 2021 to 2023, a TV series continued the adventures of the Croods and the Bettermans on Hulu and Peacock. It ran for eight seasons – a whopping 52 episodes! – and basically showed how those two families tried to make life work together in the Bettermans’ amazing treehouse.
